Yomiuri Giants

  • Tetsuya Utsumi recorded his 110th career victory on Saturday and tied Kazumi Takahashi for second on the franchise's all-time list for wins by a left-handed pitcher. Source: Sanspo 8/3/2014 ...   • Shinnosuke Abe (fourteen years, from first year in 2001 to 2014) joined Sadaharu Oh (twenty-one years, from second year in 1960 to 1980), Shigeo Nagashima (seventeen years, from first year in 1958 to 1974), and Tatsunori Hara (fourteen years, from first year in 1981 to 1994) as the only players in franchise history to record at least fourteen consecutive seasons of ten or more home runs. Abe has been using a new chest protector since August 1.  It is a little flashier than before and also has a different fit that it supposed to help keep pitches in the dirt in front of the catcher. Hanshin Tigers

  • The Tigers' last two weekend games at Koshien until the end of the month were rained out.  They will begin their extended road trip on Tuesday and will not call Koshien home until the 29th.  Until then, Kyocera Dome will host six of their "home" games: vs Hiroshima from the 8th until the 10th and vs Chunichi from the 19th until the 21st.   • Randy Messenger is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts on four days of rest this season.  Over his career with the Tigers, he is 4-5 with a 3.10 ERA in thirteen starts on four or fewer days of rest (twelve on four days of rest, one on two days of rest). After Sunday's start, Messenger could make his next start on five days of rest on the 9th against Hiroshima at Kyocera Dome, followed by a start on the 14th on four days of rest against the Yomiuri Giants at Tokyo Dome. Yakult Swallows

  • Nagisa Arakaki is slated to start a game against the Yokohama Bay Stars at Yokohama on the 9th.  Arakaki started a Ni-gun game against Nippon Ham on Saturday and gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings of work.  He also walked one, hit one, and struck out five.   • Tetsuto Yamada notched another lead-off home run on Saturday and became the fourth player in franchise history to hit five or more in one season, first since Sam Perlozzo in 1980 and the first Japanese player since Takao Sato hit six in 1955.  Through Saturday, of the seventeen home runs Yamada has hit this year, nine have come at Jingu Stadium and four at Tokyo Dome.
