The media learned on Saturday that Saibi High School in Matsuyama, Ehime was investigating bullying incidents involving a first- and second- year student on the school baseball team.

According to reports, a second-year student forced a first-year student into doing various things, like eat a stink bugs (kamemushi).  The older student also allegedly tried to get the younger student to drink kerosene.

An outside source informed school officials about the incidents earlier this month.  When the school checked with the baseball team on the 7th, they learned parents of the first-year student had already spoken to the manager.  The first-year student claimed he was a victim when approached by school officials on the 8th.

The school has filed a report with the Ehime High School Baseball Federation.

[UPDATE 9/10 @ 10:02am]

Saibi was issued a one-year suspension from games, which means they will be unable to participate in the 2015 Spring Koshien. There is a chance they will also miss the 2015 Summer Koshien. The Japan Student Baseball Association came down hard on the high school because final reports showed that second-year players were regularly bullying first-year players since late-April. There were a total nineteen victims.

Two main incidents:

  • During practices in April, two second-year players and one first-year player were chasing down baseballs during practices. One second-year player ordered the first-year player to do something to upset the other second-year player. The second-year player that got upset gave the first-year player two options: either eat a dead stink bug or drink kerosene. The first-year player put the stink bug in his mouth for three seconds before spitting it up.
  • Before practices on May 31, four second-year players came up with the idea to have first-year players fight each other. They set seven groups and had them fight in order. The four second-year players, in addition to five other second-year players, watched.

Other incidents included striking players in the buttocks with bats for a bad attitude and throwing baseballs at players at close range. Many of the incidents took place while the main team was on the road for away games.
