Yomiuri Giants

  • Hirokazu Sawamura joined the Ichi-gun pitchers for workouts at Giants Stadium on Monday.  He could make his next Ichi-gun start on the 21st against Yakult at Jingu.  If he does not pitch well, he will most likely be shuttled back to Ni-gun for more work. • Hector Mendoza pitched in a practice game against Chuo University on Tuesday.  He started the game and tossed a shutout inning.  He topped out at 146km/h and struck out two. Source: Sanspo 8/19/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Takashi Toritani recorded the 110th modasho of his career on Tuesday.  He is one modasho away from tying Makoto Imaoka for fifth on the franchise all-time list. Source: Daily Sports 8/19/2014
  • Randy Messenger joined Gene Bacque as the only foreign pitchers in franchise history to record fifty or more victories. Source: Sponichi 8/19/2014 ... Messenger has so far recorded seven RBI this year.  Bacque set the franchise record for foreign pitchers with eleven in 1965.  The last Hanshin pitcher to record ten or more RBIs in a season (foreign or Japanese) was Matt Keough with ten in 1989. • The Tigers are carrying two full-time catchers: Kazunari Tsuruoka and Ryutaro Umeno.  Ryota Imanari is listed as a catcher, but the Tigers have been using him primarily as a third baseman this year.  However, they also see him as a back-up catcher, should something happen to the other two.
