Boston Red Sox

The latest on Koji Uehara, from the Boston Herald's John Tomase:

... The Red Sox yesterday announced that Uehara will move to a setup role following a string of poor outings. The plan is to get him right and have him closing by the end of the season, but the move is clearly as much about next season as this one, even though Uehara will be a free agent and might not even pitch in Boston.

... Uehara told Masashi Yamazaki of the Tokyo Sports Press that he requested the move out of the ninth inning because he's not performing up to his standards. Regardless of whose idea it was — and the Red Sox were leaning this way as well, anyway — what's interesting is the fact that Uehara wasn't just shut down completely.

... The motivation would be simple: protect one of next year's assets, since this year doesn't mean anything.

But Uehara clearly has no interest in calling it a season, which would send him into free agency wearing a giant red flag.
