New York Yankees

The latest on Masahiro Tanaka, from the Daily News' Mark Feinsand:

... Tanaka is tentatively scheduled to start against the Blue Jays on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, throwing about 70-75 pitches in his first big-league outing since he was diagnosed with a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in early-July.

... Tanaka threw 65 pitches in a simulated game at Steinbrenner Field on Monday, his final test before the Yankees decided he was ready to return. He will likely make two big-league starts this season as long as he comes through Sunday without any problems.

... Tanaka played catch on Tuesday, reporting no issues with his elbow. He will throw a bullpen later in the week to prepare for his start, and barring any setbacks, he'll take the mound for the Yankees Sunday for the first time since July 8.

... "More than anything, I want to see if my body is able to go fully on a major-league mound; pitch on the mound," Tanaka said. "That's by far most important to me. Also, the fact that, to be able to contribute in the team's win would be something important to me, too."

Nikkan Sports has posted a portion of Tanaka's interaction with the media:

You are officially coming back.

It's been decided so now I'd just like to use what time I have to prepare for that day.

How will you approach your first outing in seventy-five days?

Honestly, I won't know until I get out there. Will I be able to perform on the mound? That is the most important thing. If I can contribute to a win in the process, that would be good.

How did you feel while you were out?

I can't even describe how it felt not being able to play with my teammates. I felt all kinds of things, but I didn't want to keep dragging that around. I moved past that and focused on getting better. I'm glad the date was set.
