by on Sep.17, 2015 @ 5:27 am, under NPB

Yoshitomo Tani held a press conference at Kyocera Dome on September 16 and announced his decision to retire after the season. A retirement ceremony has been scheduled for October 3.

A few notes taken from various sources:

  • He made the decision to retire in late-August.
  • His wife, Ryoko Tani, was supportive. He wishes his children could have seen him play more.
  • He spent the last two years away from his family. He hopes to spend more time with his children. They are into ice hockey, baseball, and soccer.
  • He is not disappointed about falling short of 2,000 hits. He used the milestsone more for motivation.
  • He has no regrets and is grateful for his nineteen-year career.
  • He is happy about being able to retire in an Orix uniform.
  • He would like to remain in baseball. Orix has offered him a coaching job next year. He put his decision on hold for the time being.
  • Most memorable most: his first career hit on May 25, 1997 -- a double off Lotte's Yasuhiko Yabuta.

He collected a single to right. He remained in the game as the left fielder for one out in the top of the 8th and was then replaced. Takahiro Okada and his family (wife and two sons) presented him with flowers on the field. Teammates tossed him into the air ten times after the game.
