    Whatever happened to Kurihara, anyway?

He just flat out disappeared and he’s not old by any stretch of the imagination. An absolute head scratcher as to why he didn’t get more plate appearances or at least traded.

Gen, do you have any insights on this? I am at a total loss as to why Kurihara just went nowhere in the last 3 years or so.

In a word: injuries. Particularly his right elbow (three surgeries so far I think). And things really started going south around 2012. And in 2013, he struggled with lower back tightness, a broken nose, and a right hamstring strain.

        Thanks Gen for the information.

        Here’s my question though:

Was Kurihara THAT injured that he didn’t merit a single plate appearance in EITHER 2014 or 2015? In fact, did he even play at ni-gun? Usually in MLB if a player doesn’t get a plate appearance at either level (MLB or minor leagues) for two years, it’s because he’s a pitcher, not a position player.

That’s the head scratcher for me. If Kurihara was that busted up, why not release him? This is something that is markedly different between MLB and NPB. Interesting to say the least. Plus, Kurihara is only 33 years old, so if he thinks he still has something left, it just seems really odd for a team that has power issues like the Carp to never get him a single plate appearance.
