[10/21/2015] Yomiuri Giants offer Yoshinobu Takahashi managerial job

The media learned on October 19 that Yoshinobu Takahashi was the top candidate to replace Tatsunori Hara as manager of the Yomiuri Giants. Owner Kojiro Shiraishi told reporters they were looking for candidates that could continue what Hara started and breath some fresh air into the process. The media mentioned other candidates, like Suguru Egawa and head coach Masahiro Kawai, but it seems Takahashi was always the top candidate for the Giants.

On October 20, team president Tsunekazu Momoi admitted the organization considered Takahashi their top candidate. Team officials, including team president Hiroshi Kubo, met him for about fifty minutes at the Palace Hotel in Tokyo later in the day.

After the meeting, Takahashi spoke to the media. He said he was offered the managerial job and was "surprised because I was already forward to next season as a player." He also said it was "definitely not a bad thing and it's a great honor. I want to give them an answer as soon as possible, but I have a lot of thinking to do." When asked about being a player-manager, he did not seem to think it was an option because of how difficult it would be for him to handle both positions at the same time. Incidentally, he feels he still has something left in the tank as a player.

The Giants would like an answer as soon as possible, but are willing to wait until the start of fall camp on November 7. Honorary manager Shigeo Nagashima believes Takahashi is the team's only choice and is ready to provide him with whatever support he can give. Tatsunori Hara also promised to help.

If Takahashi accepts the offer, all six Central League managers will be in their forties next season: Mitsuru Manaka (44), Takahashi (40), Tomoaki Kanemoto (47), Koichi Ogata (46), Motonobu Tanishige (44), and Alex Ramirez (41).

Hideki Matsui remains a front office favorite, but the organization knows he is not ready to return to Japanese baseball.
