Tambara High School in Ehime announced on October 23 that six first-year members of the school's baseball team were physically assaulted by three teammates. One of the six suffered a ruptured left eardrum caused by a slap. The school conducted and investigation and found that similar assaults took place between May and October this year.
According to school officials, the six players were struck in areas like the shoulders and chest and kicked in the buttocks. Four were forced into buying juice on several occasions. When the school questioned three members of the team, they admitted to the assaults and said they were stressed and took things too far. The incidents came to light when the manager sat down with one of the players after he noticed they were acting strange.

Former Toyota Otani High School baseball manager Takashi Kawakami (35) was taken to court for physically assaulting one his players. The Nagoya District Court's Okazaki Branch ordered Kawakami to pay a fine of 20,000 yen on October 21. The prosecution was seeking a fine of 200,000 yen.
According to the ruling, Kawakami physically assaulted one of his first-year players (like slaps on the face and kicks him in the thigh area) during practices on July 19, 2013. The judge ruled that the acts could not be justified and that they were an abuse of disciplinary authority. Kawakami's lawyer argued that appropriate measures were taken to deal with a player that was being rebellious.
