AKB48′s Everyday, Kachusha named 84th Spring Koshien intro song

The steering committee for the 84th Spring Koshien met today and officially decided to make AKB48's Everyday, Kachusha (Everyday、カチューシャ) this year's introduction song during the opening ceremonies.

UPDATE @ 7:41pm - The committee also approved the list of 123 high school candidates and nine 21st Century candidates.  A final list of schools will be decided during a selection committee meeting on 1/27.

UPDATE @ 9:42pm - Some other things that were decided:

  • The slogan will remain the same as last year: Gambaro! Nippon (がんばろう!日本).  A banner with the same phrase, currently on display at the Ishinomaki City offices, will be used during opening ceremonies.
  • Elementary/Junior High School kids from Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima will throw out ceremonial first pitches on 3/24.
  • Donations for children that lost parents to the earthquake will be collected during the tournament.
  • Messages written to earthquake survivors by captains from each of the participating schools will also be put up on display.

UPDATE @ 10:57am - Daily Sports is reporting that AKB48 could be invited to the opening ceremonies.


AKB48′s “Everyday, Kachusha” likely to be used as Spring Koshien opening ceremony intro music

The media learned on Wednesday that the steering committee for the 84th Spring Koshien has unofficially decided to use AKB48's Everyday, Kachusha as this year's opening ceremony intro music.

The music was also used for the movie Moshi Koko Yakyu no Joshi Manager ga Drucker no "Management" wo yondara (What if a female manager of a high school baseball team read Ducker's "Management").  The single also went on sale last year (5/25) and sold 1.33M copies.


City of Nishinomiya plans to present Koshien players from 1995, 1996 with commemorative souvenirs

The City of Nishinomiya announced on Friday that they will be holding a ceremony at Koshien Stadium on 2/25 in order to present players that made it to the Spring and Summer Koshien Tournaments in 1995 and 1996 with commemorative souvenirs.

Players have been getting souvenirs for making it to the Koshien Tournaments since 1960.  But souvenirs were not handed out at three Koshien Tournaments in 1995 and 1996 because of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.

2,077 players and coaches from 93 high schools will be presented with various souvenirs.  Only about 100 players and coaches from 5 Hyogo high schools are expected to attend the ceremonies on 2/25; the rest of the souvenirs will be mailed out.


Aomori Yamada High School withdraws as candidate for Summer Koshien

The Aomori High School Baseball Federation accepted Aomori Yamada High School's recommendation refusal for the 94th Summer Koshien.  According to Federation officials, Aomori Yamada made it to the Final Four of this year's Tohoku Fall Tournament and was one of three high school teams the Federation selected as candidates for the Summer Koshien.

Aomori Yamada High School also withdrew its players from the Aomori mixed team that will be taking part in a International Tournament in Taiwan (eight days beginning on 12/22).

84th Spring Koshien: 21st Century Bracket Candidates

The nine candidate schools for the 21st Century Bracket were released on Thursday. Three schools will be selected from this list during a selection committee meeting on 1/27/2012. School descriptions taken from Nikkan Sports.

84th Spring Koshien: to begin on 3/21 with 32 high schools

The first steering committee meeting for the 84th Spring Koshien was held in Osaka today.  The following items were discussed / confirmed:

  • The tournament will take place over a period of 12 days, beginning on 3/21
  • 32 high schools will take part in the tournament - three 21st Century slots, one Jingu Tournament slot, one from Hokkaido, two from Tohoku, six from Kanto / Tokyo, two from Hokushinetsu, two from Tokai, six from Kinki, five from Chugoku / Shikoku, and four from Kyushu.
  • Team selections will take place on 1/27 and brackets will be decided on 3/15.  Both will take place at the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun offices.
  • The also agreed to have Takayasu Okushima, chairman of the Japan High School Baseball Federation, send out a notice to all high school federations in the nation to take greater care in making sure playing conditions improve.

Spring Koshien steering committee confirms particpant numbers for next year’s tournament

The steering committee for the Spring Koshien met on Wednesday (6/6) and confirmed that the next year's tournament will once again involve 32 high schools.  That will include one school from Hokkaido, two from Tohoku, six from Kanto/Tokyo, two from Tokai, two from Hokushinestu, six from Kinki, five from Chugoku/Shikoku, and four from Kyushu.  The remaining 4 special spots will be reserved for three 21st Century Teams and one team selected from the Jingu Tournament champion's region.

The previous high of 73 was set in 1939 by Toho Shogyo High School (Aichi).  TokaiDai Sagami also set a club record for most totals bases in during a tournament with 113.
