[1/15/2015] Let It Go chosen as march song for Spring Koshien

The steering committee for the 2015 Spring Koshien met in Osaka on Thursday to confirm and approve a number of issues.

  • "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen was selected as the march song.
  • Asuka Sagawa's medal designs for tournament winner, runner-up, and participant were approved.
  • Elementary school kids from the Kinki region (Kyoto, Osaka, Shiga, Hyogo, Nara, and Wakayama) will be selected to throw out ceremonial first pitches (same as the last tournament)..
  • A list of 129 candidate high schools, including nine Twenty-First Century bracket schools, were approved.
  • Selections for the tournament will take place at Mainichi headquarters in Osaka at 9:00am. Participating schools will be announced during a committee meeting on the same day that starts at 3:00pm.
  • Three Twenty-first Century bracket schools will be selected. The remaining six Twenty-first Century candidates will be shifted to the general pool.

[12/17/2014] Nakamura pulls out of Spring Koshien, 15U World Cup will take place in Fukushima

The Japan High School Baseball Federation announced that they received and approved a request from Nakamura High School in Kochi Prefecture to withdraw as a Twenty-First Century candidate for the 2014 Spring Tournament. According to the Federation, a member of the team was caught harassing a student.

Nakamura was one of nine high schools that made it into the final round for the three available Twenty-First Century slots.

Coaching license workshops for former players took place in Tokyo over the weekend (December 13, 14). Seven lectures (about seven hours) were held on Saturday, five (around six hours) on Sunday. Another session will be held in Osaka this weekend (December 20, 21).

A total 147 former players attended the workshop. Among them: Haruki Ihara, Daisuke Araki, Toshiro Yufune, Mac Suzuki, Takashi Ishii, Yasuhiko Yabuta, Yasuhiro Ichiba, Kenichi Yazawa, Kunio Jonouchi, Hisao Niura, Keiji Fukui, Mikinori Kato, Shigeki Noguchi, Taisei Takagi, Keiichi Lee, Isamu Kida, Hiroshi Shibahara, Ryosuke Sawai, Mitsuo Sumi, Michio Sato, Mitsuru Okuzono, Makoto Kito, Kaoru Nimura, Ken Hirano, Takehiro Ishii, Kenji Awaguchi, Kazumi Sonokawa, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Koji Otsuka, and Misao Takaura.

[9/10/2014] 2015 Spring Koshien to begin on March 21

The Steering Committee for the 87th Spring Koshien met in Osaka on Wednesday. Among issues discussed:

  • The tournament next year will take place over twelve days beginning on March 21 (includes day off after semi-finals)
  • Thirty-two teams will be competing: twenty-eight regular, four twenty-first century, one Jingu Tournament
  • The venue will be Koshien Stadium
  • The selection committee will select school on January 23
  • Brackets will be decided on March 13
  • School and bracket selections will be held at the Mainichi Shimbun Osaka office
