Matsuzaka shifted to 60-day DL: Boston starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. Matsuzaka was recently shut down from his minor-league rehab assignment after developing pain in his neck that restricted his movement when he pitched. He reportedly had a cortisone injection on Sunday. Matsuzaka's move cleared an additional spot on the 40-man roster.

Though there's no official date for DH/OF Hideki Matsui to be called up from Triple-A Durham, Maddon said he and executive VP Andrew Friedman are monitoring him more closely. Maddon said part of the timing is Matsui being ready and the other is need, with the Rays having a lot of left-handed bats. Matsui hit an RBI single in the 10th Monday to lift the Bulls to a 3-2 victory.

The latest on Daisuke Matsuzaka (BOS), from the Providence Journals Tim Britton:

Daisuke Matsuzaka was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list effective Saturday with a strain in his right trapezius.

Matsuzaka received an injection in that trapezius over the weekend.

"The same area flared up a little maybe three weeks ago. It was the same symptoms," Matsuzaka said through interpreter Jeff Cutler. "It seemed to have cleared up, but it came up again. It restricts my movement when I throw. At this point, that's why I got the shot. Hopefully it gets better from here. MY rehab so far had been going really well, so it is a setback and it is a little disappointing."

Yoshinori Tateyama (TEX) made it back to the Majors on Monday.  From MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan:

Yoshinori Tateyama is back in the big leagues.

The Rangers called up Tateyama on Monday from Triple-A Round Rock after placing pitcher Neftali Feliz on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow. Tateyama goes into the bullpen while Scott Feldman will take Feliz's spot in the rotation.

Tateyama, who began the season on the disabled list with tightness in his lower back, pitched in 12 games for Round Rock and was 1-0 with a 0.54 ERA. In 16 2/3 innings, he allowed 12 hits and four walks while striking out 14.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (BOS) will miss his next rehab start on May 22 because of tightness that extends from the right side of his neck to his back.  A little more from the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham:

The righthander, whose minor league rehabilitation assignment was due to end on Wednesday, has been shut down because of pain in his right trapezius muscle. Matsuzaka received an injection in the area.

"That's been nagging him for quite a while and we've got to make sure that that's 100 percent before he's going out there again," manager Bobby Valentine said. "I talked to him [Saturday] about it being sore. He said he would maybe pitch through it. They examined him and didn't think it was wise."

The Red Sox have recalled Matsuzaka from his rehab assignment, and he remains on the 15-day disabled list. But he cannot begin a new rehab assignment until seven days after he was "returned from rehab," which the Red Sox did on Saturday.

Major League Baseball must approve any new rehab assignment, which is expected to be a formality, given the injury. As with any rehab assignment, Matsuzaka must give his approval, another expected formality.

Brad Penny signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.  From the SF Chronicle's John Shea:

Brad Penny is a Giant again. Well, at least he’s a Giants minor-leaguer. The pitcher who  went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six September starts for the 2009 Giants, signed a minor-league deal and will report to extended spring training on Monday.

The Giants see him as a possible reliever. Brian Wilson is done for the season, and Guillermo Mota is serving a 100-game drug suspension.

There's also a short bit about Japan:

On Japan: "It just didn't work out. He wasn't happy where he was over there. He wanted to come back here. The shoulder or elbow, that's not an issue. He showed it today in the bullpen. We'll make sure he is healthy and make sure he will help us. It'll take a little time. When he thinks he's ready and he thinks he's ready, it'll be a mutual agreement, and we'll have him here to help us."

How did your last at bat feel?

It felt like I go all of it.  But it did not have enough carry.  I did, however, hit the ball with the sweet spot.

What about your at bats against [Daisuke] Matsuzaka?

I try to approach every at bat the same way, regardless of who is pitching.  But I may have been thinking about him somewhere in the back of my mind.

What did you think of his pitches?

I think he is still working on his pitches.  That said, he was throwing well.

He threw a difficult pitch during your second at bat.

It was like a shuto in that it went away from me.  I ended up hitting the ball off the end of the bat.

And your fourth at bat?

I do not think it was bad.  In terms of feel, I think things are improving.

There was another catcher's interference, second time in as many days.

I am not really sure what the problem is.  I am sure there is a problem with my swing as well.  But I am not really sure.

And Matsuzaka:

How is your right elbow?

I think it is fine, but my pitches are not going where I want them to.  It if was a minor difference it would not be a problem, but it is fairly big difference.  I am feeling some stress from that.

On facing [Hideki] Matsui.

I was looking forward to it.  While watching other pitchers face him, I felt I could get him to hit grounders if I threw my pitches well.  I went with what the catcher put down.

There was a catcher's interference in his third at bat.

Things like that happen at both the minor league and major league level.  I needed to adjust accordingly.

What do you need to work on next?

I need to work on my change, slider, everything.  I need to properly throw all my pitches, otherwise they will catch up.  And if I can slowly work on the movement so pitches miss the sweet spot, then I will be able throw deeper into games.

I just noticed now that The Maui News posted an article back on March 14 that Yoshida signed a deal with the Na Koa Ikaika Maui.  A snip:

Eri Yoshida, who last year became the the first female pitcher to earn a win in a North American professional baseball league in 13 years, has re-signed with Na Koa Ikaika Maui, the team said Tuesday.

"I am glad that Eri will be back for the 2012 season," said Maui manager Jamie Vermilyea. "We are looking to build on her solid start last season. She is a specialty pitcher, mainly working off of a knuckleball. We are thinking about developing another pitch. Most likely we will be looking to use her as a starter."
