Kazuo Matsui recorded the 2,000th hit of his career tonight during a game against the Softbank Hawks at Akita Stadium. The hit came in the 1st inning off Kenichi Nakata. He became the forty-sixth player in NPB history (second switch-hitter) to reach the milestone. The 2,000 hits in 1,742 games was sixth fastest among the forty-six players.

Other notes about the milestone:

  • Among Japanese players with NPB and MLB hits, only Ichiro Suzuki (4,176) and Hideki Matsui (2,643 hits) have more combined hits than Matsui.
  • Matsui is one of six players in NPB history to record 2,000 hits and steal 350 bases.
  • Breakdown of hits for Matsui: zero hits in 487 games, one hit in 701 games, two hits in 381 games, three hits in 156 games, four hits in 15 games, five hits in two games.

UPDATE 7/27 @ 3:35am -

The Marines have released some merchandise commemorating Iguchi's 2,000th NPB+MLB hit.

Source: official announcement

Lotterias in Chiba will celebrate the milestone by selling shakes for sixty yen, beginning on the 27th.  The two Lotterias near QVC Marine will sell shakes for six yen.  There is some fine print: the deal is good for the first 2,000 customers (per store), it must be combined with either a burger or a burger set, and the offer is not valid at the Lotteria inside QVC Marine.

UPDATE 7/27 @ 5:40pm -

A few more notes about Iguchi's 2,000 NPB+MLB hits:

  • Nakamura and Iguchi are the only two players in NPB history to record 2,000 NPB+MLB hits after returning to the NPB.  The other three players reached the 2,000-hit milestone while playing in the Majors.
  • At thirty-eight years and sevens months, Iguchi is the second oldest player, behind Nakamura (thirty-nine years and nine months), to record 2,000 NPB+MLB hits.
  • Iguchi and Nakamura are the only two players to hit home runs for their 2,000th NPB+MLB hit.  Makoto Matsubara, Hideji Kato, Hiromitsu Ochiai, and Alex Ramirez are the only players to hit home runs for their 2,000th NPB hits.

UPDATE 7/30 @ 6:29am -

Daily Sports posted a portion of Iguchi's post-game interview with the media:

What are you feeling now that you have reached the milestone?

I am happy about getting the hit, but right now I feel disappointed about losing the game.

What are your thoughts about reaching the milestone on a home run?

People around me are saying that I went for it, but I was not really thinking that at all.  I just swung the bat where I saw the pitch and it ended up a home run.  I myself am surprised.

You recorded the hit off the undefeated Rakuten pitcher [Masahiro] Tanaka.

I thought I would not be able to reach the milestone today [because of who was on the mound].  When I stepped into the batter's box, I thought I might have a chance since I got a hit my my second trip to the plate.  The pitch I hit [during my third trip] was a fat pitch I timed perfectly.  It would have been better if it helped the team win.

Of the 2,000 NPB+MLB hits you recorded, are there any that your remember clearly?

All of them are firmly embedded in my head, but I think my strongest memories are my very first trip to the plate and today's 2,000th hit.

Your thoughts on reaching 2,000 NPB+MLB hits.

I got to 2,000 hits by playing a long career and accumulating numbers of that time.  For the remaining games, I will do my best to help the team win.

Is there anything you want to say to the people out there?

The coaches that helped me develop when I was little, the fans, and my family.  I am grateful [to you all].

You can still go for 2,000 NPB hits.

That is still far down the road.  My goal this year is to help the team win a pennant.  I will continue to do my best tomorrow.

Chunichi Dragons: Motonobu Tanishige reaches 2,000-hit milestone

by on May.06, 2013 @ 9:47 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Motonobu Tanishige had 1,998 hits coming into tonight's game against the Yakult Swallows at Jingu Stadium.  He struck out swinging in his first at bat in the 3rd inning before hitting a game-tying two-run double to left in the 4th for his 1,999th hit.  In the top of the 6th, with Takehiko Oshimoto on the mound for Yakult, Tanishige hit an 0-1 fork into right for hit number 2,000.

Tanishige is the forty-fourth player in NPB history to reach the 2,000-hit milestone.  At forty-two years and four months, he is the oldest player to reach the milestone -- the previous high of forty-one years and five months was set by Shinya Miyamoto last year.  He also joins Katsuya Nomura and Atsuya Furuta as the only catchers in NPB history to reach the milestone.

===

UPDATE 5/7 @ 1:54am - Sponichi has posted portions of Tanishige's post-game interview:

How do you feel now that you reached the milestone?

I feel like I finally accomplished it.  But I feel badly about the team dropping to eight game under .500.  I thought I might feel someone different at the moment of contact, but it felt no different.

You were able to accomplish the feat in front of your parents and children.

My parents and my youngest son came.  It also happened to be my youngest son's birthday today, so it was a good way to celebrate.  My son gave me a board with the words "Congratulations on hit 2,000."

You are the third catcher to record 2,000 hits.

In the past, there were only Katsuya Nomura and Atsuya Furuta.  If I consider how I am the third, I feel I did a pretty good job.  I was always batting seventh or eighth, never in the middle of the order.  I got here because I just kept chipping away.

You are in the books for taking the longest and being the oldest to reach the milestone.

That is just working within my abilities, doing the things I can do at the moment.  I was not doing it consciously.  I do not feel anything about being the oldest when achieving the milestone.

What helped you make it to the milestone?

If you were take baseball away from Tanishige, he would be a man that can do nothing.  It was my love for baseball that kept me going.

Norihiro Nakamura recorded his 2,000th hit today during a game against the Chunichi Dragons at Nagoya Dome.  Nakamura entered the game two hits short of the milestone.  He walked in his first at bat, fouled out to right in his second at bat, and then closed the gap to one hit with a single to center in his third at bat in the 5th inning.  After fouling out to the catcher in the 7th, he got another try in the 8th -- with runners on first and second and one out, he hit an 0-1 fastball to center for a two-run double off Kenichi Nakata.

Nakamura is the forty-third player in NPB history to reach the 2,000-hit milestone.

===

UPDATE 5/6 @ 1:23am -

Nikkan Sports has posted portions of Nakamura's post-game interview.

How do you feel right now?

I took a few detours along the way and got to experience a number of different things.  I am really grateful to everyone I met along the way.

On reaching the milestone at Nagoya Dome.

I spent two years in the Dragons organization and the cheering fans made a big impression on me.  I wanted to somehow make it to today and reach the milestone at Nagoya Dome.  I feel relieved.

On reaching 2,000 hits.

When I popped out to the catcher in the previous at bat, I thought it would be impossible for me to do it today.  I owe it to my teammates for keeping the game going.  I do not really remember much about my 2,000th hit, or at least what I did in order to get it.  I have never experienced anything like this before.  So this is what it feels like to hit 2,000.  I do not know why I cannot remember anything.

[Motonobu] Tanishige presented you with flowers.

I asked him to excuse me for reaching the milestone first.  He congratulated me.

You reached the milestone on May 5.

I heard about the ceremonies for Nagashima-san and Matsui-san and initially thought about avoiding the milestone today, but as I got my swings at the plate, I just wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.  I am glad I was able to make it.

What was the most difficult thing that happened in your career?  The best thing in your career?

Too many good things happened that I cannot choose one.  There was a time when I was having a difficult time finding a team to play for.  When I was at home, my daughters were worried and avoided talking about baseball.  That was a hard time for me.

What does your family mean to you?

I was able to make it to 2,000 because of my family.  I worked hard because I wanted to extend my career as long as possible for my family to see.

What is your new goal?

In terms of personal goals, I would like to hit one more grand slam to move into a tie with [Sadaharu] Oh.  Beyond that, I want to do my best to help my team make the Climax Series, move one step closer to a championship.

Yakult Swallows: Shinya Miyamoto records 2,000th career hit

by on May.04, 2012 @ 3:53 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Shinya Miyamoto became the fortieth player in NPB history to reach 2,000 hits today with a single to center in his first at bat at of the afternoon (vs Hiroshima's Yuya Fukui).

At forty-one years and five months, he is also the oldest player to reach the milestone (broke Hiromitsu Ochiai's record of forty-one years and four months).  He is also just the second player, behind Atsuya Furuta, to reach the milestone after playing college and industrial ball.

Miyamoto and Atsunori Inaba (HAM) are just the second pair of former team mates that played their first game with same team in the same year and reached the 2,000 hit milestones during their careers.  The other: Hideji Kato and Yutaka Fukumoto played in their first games with the Hankyu Braves in 1969; Fukumoto reached 2,000 in 1983, Kato in 1987.  That makes Miyamoto and Inaba the first pair of former team mates that played their first game with the same team in the same year and also reached the 2,000 hit milestone in the same year.

Yomiuri Giants: Michihiro Ogasawara records 2,000th career hit

by on May.05, 2011 @ 5:57 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Michihiro Ogasawara recorded his 2,000 career hit in the 8th inning of today's game against the Hanshin Tigers.

With the bases empty and Hiroyuki Kobayashi on the mound for Hanshin, Ogasawara lined a single back up the box (almost hitting Kobayashi) for his 2,000th career hit.  Ogasawara had gone 0-for-3 (fly out to short, strikeout looking, DP) in his first three trips to the plate.

Ogasawara is the 38th player in NPB history to achieve the milestone and the fourth quickest player at 1,736 games.

1st hit: 5/10/1997 off Takehiro Ishii (SEI)

1,000th hit: 7/24/2004 off Dae-Sung Koo (ORI) in 862nd game

1,500th hit: 9/15/2007 off Michito Miyazaki (HIR) in 1,288th game

2,000th hit: 5/5/2011 off Hiroyuki Kobayashi (HAN) in 1,736th game

===

Daily Sports has posted comments from Ogasawara:

You got your 2,000th hit...

I've been struggling lately so I'm really grateful to the manager for using me, my teammates, and the staff.

What were your thoughts after you got down to 1 hit?

It was on my mind.  It isn't often so many cameras show up, so it naturally took over my mind.

What were you think when you got up to bat in the 8th?

We were down by one, so I was thinking about a hit, but I just wanted to get on base.  I'm glad I was able to make good contact.

How did it feel when you made contact?

I felt I made good contact.  When I saw the ball go between the second baseman and the shortstop, I confirmed my thinking.

It seems you shouted out "Yes!" at that time.

It was just part of the situation.  I was glad to get on base.  I also heard a breath of relief from everyone in the stadium and all of that sort of snowballed into me shouting.

The crowd when wild when you got the milestone hit.

I made me happy that it wasn't just the Giants' fans, but also the Hanshin fans that were cheering and clapping.  That made me realize how big [2,000 hits] was.

You are the 4th quickest to achieve the milestone.

I'm sure it's fast, but things have been slow for me this year.  It isn't like they'll let me get hits easily since we're all competing to win, so to be the 4th quickest means I must have done things right up to now.

What were the most memorable hits?

I guess my first hit and my 2,000th hit.

You achieved it in your 15th year.

I didn't get to this number all by myself.  I'm very grateful to all my coaches / instructors, teammates, and staff.

Your also closing in on 400 [homers] as well.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm still a bit a ways from that.  I just want to hit as many home runs I can that helps lead the team to a victory.
