I had a feeling the Lions would be victorious. Had the Giants taken the Nippon Series, I'm not sure if they would have been quite a lucky. That the SK Wyverns lost their final game most certainly helped the Lions as well.

And it think it fitting that the final game of the series was decided in the bottom of the 9th of a scoreless game with 2 outs. And that the winning run (Yoshihito Ishii) got to first base on a walk. And that the runner scored from first on an extra base hit by Tomoaki Sato (a player who hasn't had more than 200 ABs in the last 4 seasons).

And once again, the Lions came through with solid pitching. In the Championship Game Wakui, Hoshino, Ohnuma, Okamoto tossed 9 innings of shutout ball, striking out 15 while walking 4 and scattering 5 hits. Over the entire 4 game Asia Series the Lions pitching staff finished with a 1.91 ERA (1.15 WHIP). They struck out a series high 50 batters while walking only 8 over 33 innings! You can get much better pitching than that.

Congrats to the Lions for their Asia Series Championship win.

BTW: I've updated the Asia Series Team Totals.

Here are the results from Day 3:

Code:
                               1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Saitama Seibu Lions (NPB) 2 3 6 2 0 3 0 16 13 0
Tenshin Lions (CBA) 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 4 2

First Pitch: 11:59
Attendance: 8,478
Time: 2hr 41min

                               1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
SK Wyverns (KBO) 0 1 0 0 0 2 0 1 0 4 8 1
Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (CPBL) 0 0 0 5 1 0 0 4 x 10 12 1

First Pitch: 18:00
Attendance: 5,228
Time: 3hr 22min

Nakamura went 2-for-3 with a walk, a homer, and 3 ribs. Kuriyama also drove in 3 runs with a 3-for-6 performance. Only 2 players in the starting lineup didn't have rbis.

Now the focus will be on whether or not the SK Wyverns can beat the Toitsu Lions. If they do, it'll be the Wyverns vs the Seibu Lions tomorrow at the Asia Series Championships.

If you'd like to see Team Totals so far (through the Seibu Lions game today), click here. If you click in, you'll see that the SK Wyverns have really done an exceptional job so far.

10:03PM UPDATE: Ok, so it actually happened, the Wyverns lost and that means three teams finish the series at 2-1.

Standings

Code:
Team W L
=====================================
SK Wyverns (KBO) 2 1
Saitama Seibu Lions (NPB) 2 1
Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (CPBL) 2 1
Tenshin Lions (CBA) 0 3

      SKW SEI TOU TEN
SKW - 1-0 0-1 1-0
SEI 0-1 - 1-0 1-0
TOU 1-0 0-1 - 1-0
TEN 0-1 0-1 0-1 -

Since there is a three-way tie at the top, the two teams with the fewest number of runs will advance to the finals. And surprisingly, that happens to be the Touitsu Lions and Seibu Lions. So what at first appeared would be a match-up pitting the Seibu Lions against the SK Wyverns, is now the Touitsu Lions against the Seibu Lions.

BTW: I updated the above link with information from the SKW vs. TOU game.

Here are the game results from the second day of the Asia Series.

Saitama Seibu Lions (NPB) 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 2 5 0

First Pitch: 18:00
Attendance: 8,443
Time: 2hr 34min

Current Standings

Code:
Team W L
=====================================
SK Wyverns (KBO) 2 0
Saitama Seibu Lions (NPB) 1 1
Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (CPBL) 1 1
Tenshin Lions (CBA) 0 2

The Seibu Lions will need to win their game against the Tenshin Lions today (12:00 start) if they want a chance to battle it out for the Asia Series Cup.

While unlikely, there is an off-chance that three teams finish at 2-1. In that event, here are the tie-breaker rules:

  1. Head-to-Head results
  2. The team with the fewer amount of earned runs
  3. The team that scored more runs
  4. Coin toss

My Prediction:
Wyverns beat Touitsu Lions
Seibu Lions beat Tenshin Lions

Wyverns and Seibu Lions will face off against each for the Asia Series Trophy.

Incidentally, a man going by the name Takayuki Kishi started the game for the Seibu Lions against the Toitsu Lions. His line score is as follows:

8 IP, 120 PT, 28 PA, 25 AB, 2 H, 10 K, 2 BB, 1 ER

The kid is on a roll.

Neither of the games on the schedule were televised, which was a little disappointing for me. In any case, here are the results.

So with the Seibu Lions taking the Nippon Series Championship, the stage is now set for the Asia Series. Here is the current bracket layout:

November 13

Game 1 @ 12:00
Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (Taipei - CPBL) vs Tenshin Lions (China - CBA)

Game 2 @ 18:00
SK Wyverns (Korea - KBO) vs Seibu Lions (Japan - NPB)

November 14

Game 3 @ 12:00
Tenshin Lions (China - CBA) vs SK Wyverns (Korea - KBO)

Game 4 @ 18:00
Seibu Lions (Japan - NPB) vs Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (Taipei - CPBL)

November 15

Game 5 @ 12:00
Tenshin Lions (China - CBA) vs Seibu Lions (Japan - NPB)

Game 6 @ 18:00
Touitsu 7-Eleven Lions (Taipei - CPBL) vs SK Wyverns (Korea - KBO)

November 16

Game 7 @ 14:00
Championship Game

Now that I'm seeing this list, I think the Seibu Lions were destined to make it to the Asia Series. That's right, three of the four teams are Lions!
