Sunday Starters

The Yakult Swallows could start Shohei Tateyama (35 pitches in relief on 11/3; 2 days of rest) while the Chunichi Dragons go with Kazuki Yoshimi (112 pitches on 11/2; 3 days of rest).

Softbank Hawks

Yuya Hasegawa became the first player in franchise history (8th in NPB history) to record 4 hits in a playoff / Climax Series game.  He's also the first player in playoff / Climax Series / Nippon Series history to collect 4 hits with a walk-off.

===

Nobuhiko Matsunaka became just the 2nd player in postseason history to record a pinch-hit homer on Friday night.  The other: Eiji Fujii on 10/9/1977.

He also tried to rush the field on Saturday when the top of the 12th ended in a 1-1 tie -- while the Hawks did secure the Climax Series the moment the top of the 12th ended, the game was still in progress.

Seibu Lions

Hideaki Wakui became just the 3rd pitcher in playoff / Climax Series history to carry a no-hitter through at least 5 innings (3 pitches, 4 instances).  He's also the 1st pitcher to do it twice (6.2 IP in 2008, 5 innings in 2011).

Chunich Dragons

Of the 20 teams that have played in the playoffs / Climax Series and come within one game of taking the series (including the Softbank Hawks this year), 18 have gone on to the Nippon Series.  The two teams that didn't make it: Lotte in 1977 and Softbank in 2010.

===

Masahiko Morino was upset about how Hiroyasu Tanaka (YAK) stood on the middle of the first base bag when he collided with him in the bottom of the 9th inning of Friday night's game.

"Things are not ok," said Morino.  "Unbelievable.  I don't know of any professional players that would stand with the bag between their legs."

Yakult Swallows

Kyohei Muranaka could be available out of the bullpen tonight.

===

Reporters presented Shinya Miyamoto with a cake to celebrate his 41st birthday before Saturday's game.

The Yakult Swallows could go with Katsuki Akagawa while the Chunichi Dragons counter with Yudai Kawai.

Brian Falkenborg was not available on Friday night due after he tweaked his left leg on Thursday night.

===

Sumo wrestler and Softbank fan Kotoshogiku met with some of the Hawks' players before the game on Friday.

Chunichi Dragons

By taking Maximo Nelson off the active roster on Friday (not feeling well), the Dragons have lost him for the entirety of the Climax Series.

Yakult Swallows

The Swallows announced on Friday they'll be holding public viewing events at Jingu Stadium if there are Final Stage games on 11/6 and 11/7.  Gates will open at 5:30pm and admission will be free.

Softbank Hawks

Tsuyoshi Wada recorded his 2nd playoff / Climax Series victory of his career.  Only two other pitchers in franchise history have recorded as many victories (Michio Sato and Akihiro Yanase), but neither recorded their victories as starters.

Seibu Lions

Hiroshi Hirao won't be available for tonight's game because of a fever (swollen tonsils).  Hirao went to the hospital for treatment in the morning and is now resting at the team hotel.  He is essentially considered day-to-day.

===

Takeya Nakamura hit a solo homer of Tsuyoshi Wada in the 7th inning of last night's game against the Softbank Hawks.  For Nakamura, it was his first career homer off Wada.

Chunichi Dragons

Maximo Nelson was taken off the active roster today and replaced by Yudai Kawai.

===

Masahiko Morino recorded his 7th career playoff / Climax Series homer of his career on Thursday night.  That's second to Tyrone Woods' 8.

Yakult Swallows

Yasushi Iihara hit the 8th pinch-hit homer in playoff / Climax Series history (4th in CL).  He also became the 5th player in NPB history (1st in the CL) to finish the season with 0 homers and hit one during the the playoffs / Climax Series.  The other 4 players: Yoshinori Hirose in 1973; Yoshihiro Iizuka in 1977; Satoshi Kuroda in 1982; and Makoto Imaoka in 2010.

===

Tetsuto Yamada became just the 2nd player in NPB history to play their first career Ichi-gun game in the playoffs.  The other: Tatsuro Iwasaki in 2007 as a pinch-runner.

Softbank Hawks

The Hawks won the first game of a playoff series for the first time since 2004.

10/12/2005: Lost game 1 of the 2nd Stage against Lotte, 4-2

10/7/2006: Lost game 1 of the 1st Stage against Seibu, 1-0

10/8/2007: Lost game 1 of the 1st Stage against Lotte, 8-4

10/16/2009: Lost game 1 of the 1st Stage against Rakuten, 11-4

10/14/2010: Lost game 1 of the Final Stage against Lotte, 3-1

===

Brian Falkenborg tweaked his left leg while tossing warmups in the 8th (his leg got caught in one of the holes).  He still managed to stay in the game and allowed a run over an inning of work.

Said Falkenborg, "The 8th inning is my [responsibility].  I was running on adrenaline."

The team will wait to see how Falkenborg is feeling tomorrow before deciding what to do next.

===

Toshiya Sugiuchi threw about 50 pitches in the Yahoo Dome bullpen on Thursday.  He's currently started to start game 3 of the Final Stage of the Climax Series.

Chunichi Dragons

Maximo Nelson didn't show up for pre-game practice at Nagoya Dome on Thursday.  A team rep told reporters that Nelson wasn't feeling well and was resting at home.  For now, it doesn't seem serious enough for the team to take him off the active roster.

Daisuke Yamai could get Nelson's start on Friday.

Yakult Swallows

Kyohei Muranaka could get Friday's start.

Softbank Hawks

If the Final Stage goes to 6 games, the Hawks are planning on having Tadashi Settsu ready in the bullpen and Nobuhiko Matsunaka available off the bench.

Seibu Lions

Both Kazuyuki Hoashi and Kazuhisa Makita told reporters on Wednesday that they wanted to avoid getting distracted by the Softbank runners and would focus most of their attention on the batters.

Chunichi Dragons

Kazuki Yoshimi recorded his 4th career Climax Series victory on Wednesday (4-0, 5 starts).  That's the second highest number of Climax Series wins behind Yu Darvish's 5.

===

Hiromitsu Ochiai's contracted ended on 10/31.  According to a number of reports (Sanspo, Sports Hochi to name two), the Dragons have signed him to a day-to-day contract worth anywhere from 1.0M to 1.8M yen per day.

===

The Dragons drew 34,689 fans on Wednesday night.  The max cap at Nagoya Dome is listed as 38,500.

2011 Postseason News and Notes: Ogawa could bench Hatakeyama if his bat doesn’t come alive

Softbank Hawks

Seiichi Uchikawa told reporters on Tuesday he was prepared to drop down a bunt if necessary (even though he had 0 sac hits this season).

Seibu Lions

Tomoaki Sato joined the Ichi-gun team for practice at Yahoo Dome on Tuesday.  The Lions could end up adding Sato to the CS roster because of his success against Softbank Hawk Tsuyoshi Wada (10-for-18 over the last 2years).

Chunichi Dragons

Hiromitsu Ochiai told reporters he doesn't want any of his players for him.

"Don't play baseball for me," said Ochiai.  "Play baseball for yourself.  Playing for me won't provide you with anything.  After all, you've all played baseball for a living up to now.  No reason to change that now.  Just keep doing that."

Yakult Swallows

Tetsuto Yamada joined the Ichi-gun players for practice on Wednesday.  He won't be added to the Climax Series roster but will stay with the team in case someone goes down with an injury.

===

Junji Ogawa told reporters on Tuesday that he was prepared to bench Kazuhiro Hatakeyama if his bat doesn't come to life -- he went 1-for-10 during the First Stage of the Climax Series.

Hatakeyama went 1-for-4 on Wednesday: he led off the 2nd with a single to right; led off the 4th with a ground out to short; flied out to left with runners on first and second and 1 out in the 6th; and grounded out to the pitcher in the 8th.

===

Shinya Miyamoto will turn 41 on 11/5.

Seibu Lions

The Lions arrived in Fukuoka on Monday.

Chunichi Dragons

The starter for game 1 of the Final Stage of the Climax Series appears to be a toss-up between Kazuki Yoshimi, Maximo Nelson, and Wei-Ying Chen -- all three worked out at Nagoya Dome on Monday and went through the same exact routine.

Based on a variety of reports, Yoshimi will likely be the game 1 starter.

===

Motonobu Tanishige took some grounders at first during practices on Tuesday.

===

Masahiko Morino and Masahiro Araki stayed back for about 30 minutes of extra BP after regular practices on Monday.

Yakult Swallows

Tatsuyoshi Masubuchi will likely start game 1 of the Final Stage of the Climax Series.

===

The Swallows were planning on bringing Shohei Tateyama into the game if Kyohei Muranaka put a runner on base after 2 outs.

===

At 21 years and 3 months, Katsuki Akagawa is the 4th youngest pitcher to record a victory in the playoffs / Climax Series.
