2013 Georgia Spirit Award goes to Masahiro Tanaka

Masahiro Tanaka won the 2013 Georgia Spirit Award for his start against the Seibu Lions on August 16.

Tanaka held the Seibu Lions to just one run and racked up ten strikeouts.  He also set a new NPB record by extending his winning streak to twenty-one games.  Georgia video - Box score

Tomoyuki Sugano won the Selection Committee's Special Award for making a nice defensive play on April 13.

The Giants had a 1-0 lead over the Yakult Swallows heading into the top of the 6th inning.  With a runner on second and no out, Masanori Ishikawa attempted to advance the runner on a sac bunt.  But insteead of hitting the ball on the ground, he popped the pitch into the air.  Sugano was charging on contact and made a sliding catch for the first out of the inning.  The Giants won the game 3-1.  Georgia video - Box score

[11/12/2013] Sky Perfect’s Walk-off Award for the 2013 Season

The winners of Sky Perfect's Walk-off Award for the 2013 season are:

Central League

Hisayoshi Chono - Yomiuri Giants

August 29 vs Hanshin at Tokyo Dome.  Scored tied at two.  Led off the bottom of the 10th by smacking a 1-0 pitch over the leftfield fence.  It was the second walk-off home run of his career, the first since he blasted a pinch-hit grand slam on October 22, 2011.

Pacific League

Hideto Asamura - Seibu Lions

August 7 vs Nippon Ham at Seibu Dome.  Down 6-4 in the bottom of the 9th with runners on first and second and two out, he hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right for his second walk-off homer of the year.  It was also the third walk-off home run of his career (June 24, 2011 vs Rakuten; May 31, 2013 vs Yakult; and August 7, 2013 vs Nippon Ham).

Twelfth Georgia Award (2013)

The Twelfth Georgia Award for 2013 went to Hiroshima Carp Kenta Maeda.

Maeda was not feeling well (he had a fever), but still took the mound.  He ended up tossing six shutout innings and struck out eight.  Maeda got the win and kept the Giants from clinching first.  Final score, Hiroshima 7, Yomiuri 4.  Georgia video - Box score

Sky Perfect’s Walk-off Award: September 2013

The Central League and Pacific League announced the winners of Sky Perfect's Walk-off Award for September.

Yoshiyuki Ishihara, Hiroshima Carp

September 17 vs Hanshin at Mazda Stadium.  Scored tied at one.  Led off the bottom of the 9th with a solo home run to left. The victory extended the team's winning streak to seven games and put them 5.5 games ahead of 4th place Chunichi.

Yasuyuki Kataoka, Seibu Lions

September 25 vs Rakuten at Seibu Dome.  Tied at two, runner on second, two out. Kataoka nailed a two-run homer to left to give the Lions a 4-2 win. It was the second walk-off home run of his career, first since July 11, 2009.

NPB: Nihon Seimei MVP Award for September 2013

Central League

Nihon Seimei MVP Awards

Shingo Kawabata, Yakult Swallows (First Time)
23 G, 35-for-89, 2 HR, 16 RBI, .393 BA

Won the award for the first time in his career.  Played in all twenty-three of his team's games in September.  Collected at least one hit in nineteen games and multiple hits in ten (three or more hits in five).  Led the league in batting average in September.  First Japanese Yakult player to win the award since Shinya Miyamoto in April 2011.

Bryan Bullington, Hiroshima Carp (Second Time)
4 G, 4-0, 0 CG, 27.0 IP, 19 K, 3 ER, 1.00 ERA

His four victories to no losses and league-leading 1.00 ERA were a big reason for his selection.  Won his first award in April 2011.  First foreign player in Carp history to win the award multiple times.  Joined Terry Bross (April 1995, September 1995), Seth Greisinger (June 2007, July 2008), and Jason Standridge (June 2011, July 2011) as the only players in league history to win the award mulitple times.

Pacific League

Nihon Seimei MVP Awards

Yuya Hasegawa, Softbank Hawks (Second Time)
24 G, 36-for-95, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .379 BA

Played in all twenty-four of his team's games in September.  Led the league in batting average, hits, slugging (.600), and total bases (57).  Recorded first five hit game on September 4; hit a walk-off double on September 15; hit a walk-off triple on September 28.  Won first award in June 2013.

Masahiro Tanaka, Rakuten Eagles (Twelfth Time, fifth in a row)
4 G, 3-0, 1 Sv, 27.0 IP, 29 K, 4 ER, 1.33 ERA

Pitched in four games in September.  Tied for the league-lead in wins.  Tossed two complete games.  Extended his 2013 winning streak to twenty-two games.  Recorded his first save in four years when his team won the pennant on September 26.

Mizuno MVP Farm Awards for September 2013

The Ni-gun Mizuno MVP awards for September.

Eastern League

Takahiro Araki - Yakult Swallows
11 G, 20-for-42, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 2 SB, .476 BA

Recorded a hit in every September game he played in and ended the season with a fifteen-game winning streak that began on August 27.  Led the league in batting average, hits, and OBP (.566) for the month of September.

Western League

Tomohiro Abe - Hiroshima Carp
15 G, 24-for-63, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 3 SB, .381 BA

Spent most of his time in September batting lead-off.  Failed to collect a hit in just one September game.  Led the league in hits.

Tenth Georgia Award (2013)

The Tenth Georgia Award for 2013 went to Yomiuri Giant Hisayoshi Chono.

On August 29, against the Hanshin Tigers, with the score tied at two in the bottom of the 10th, Chono stepped up to the plate against Ryoma Matsuda.  Coming into the game, Matsuda had gone seventeen consecutive appearances without allowing a run.  Chono snapped the streak with a walk-off home run to left.  The Giants won the game 3-2.   Georgia video - Box score

Mizuno MVP Farm Awards for August 2013

Eastern League

Akihisa Nishida - Yakult Swallows
18 G, 22-for-58, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 0 SB, .379 BA

Played in every game in August.  Batting average was good for third, on base percentage for second.

Western League

Hirofumi Yamanaka - Softbank Hawks
11 G, 4-0, 0 Sv, 21.0 IP, 14 SO, 0 BB, 1 ER, 0.43 ERA

Pitched in eleven of twenty games, predominantly in relief.  Gave up just one earned run and walked none.  Led the league in wins.
