[11/27/2014] 2014 Georgia Spirit Award: Shohei Otani (HAM)

Shohei Otani won the 2014 Georgia Spirit Award for his start against the Rakuten Eagles on April 20.

Otani took the mound against the Rakuten Eagles at kobo Stadium on April 20.  With a 1-0 lead and runners on first and second and two out in the 6th, he faced clean-up hitter Andruw Jones.  Jones fouled off a couple of fastballs over 150km/h and stopped himself from swinging at a 2-2, 132km/h breaking pitch, but he could not catch up to the next pitch and struck out swinging on a 154km/h fastball.   Georgia video - Box score

Special awards were also given to Masahiro Yamamoto and Atsunori Inaba.

Yamamoto's start against the Hanshin Tigers on September 5 - Yamamoto got the start against the Tigers on September 5. He tossed five shutout innings while allowing five hits and got the win. At forty-nine years and twenty-five days, he broke Shinji Hamazaki's 1950 record for oldest pitcher to win a game. He also set a number of other records, like oldest player to appear in a game, oldest player to pitch in  game, oldest pitcher to start a game, and oldest pitcher to strike a hitter out. Georgia video - Box score

Inaba's game against the Seibu Lions on September 30 - The Nippon Ham Fighters were down 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th against the Seibu Lions. Sho Nakata hit a one-out single to left. Yuji Iiyama followed with a sac hit. With a runner on second and two out, Inaba stepped in to pinch-hit for Shogo Akada. Seibu's Tatsushi Masuda got ahead in the count with a quick first strike. On the next pitch, Inaba took a quick cut and drilled the ball over the fence in right for a two-run blast. The Fighters hung on and won the game, 4-3. Georgia video - Box score

Twelfth Georgia Award (2014)

The Twelfth Georgia Award for 2014 went to Atsunori Inaba for his pinch-hit home run on September 30.

The Nippon Ham Fighters were down 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th against the Seibu Lions. Sho Nakata hit a one-out single to left. Yuji Iiyama followed with a sac hit. [10/21/2014] Sky Perfect’s Walk-off Award for the 2014 Season

The winners of Sky Perfect's Walk-off Award for the 2014 season are:

Central League

Kosuke Fukudome - Hanshin Tigers

July 22 vs Yomiuri at Koshien [NPB Channel]. Scored tied at two. Bottom of the 12th, none on and two out. Fukudome hit a walk-off home run to right.

Pacific League

Nobuhiro Matsuda - Softbank Hawks

October 2 vs Orix Buffaloes at YafuOku Dome [Pa-League TV]. Tied at one. Bottom of the 10th, bases loaded and one out. Matsuda hit a 1-2 pitch for a walk-off single to left. The victory helped the Hawks clinch first in the Pacific League.

Eleventh Georgia Award (2014)

Sky Perfect’s Walk-off Award: September 2014

The Central League and Pacific League announced the winners of Sky Perfect's Walk-off Award for September.

Tony Blanco, Yokohama Bay Stars

September 23 vs Hanshin at Yokohama Stadium.  Down 1-0. Bottom of the 9th. With a runner on first and one out, Blanco blasted a home run to give the Bay Stars a walk-off 2-1 win. He also hit a walk-off blast in a 2-2 game against Chunichi on the 15th.

Kazuo Matsui, Rakuten Eagles

September 8 vs Orix at kobo Stadium [Pa-League TV].  Down 4-3.  Bottom of the 9th, runner on first and no out. Matsui hit a home run down the left field line that gave the Eagles a 5-4 victory. It was the fifth walk-off home run of his career.

Tenth Georgia Award (2014)

The Tenth Georgia Award for 2014 went to Dai-Kang Yoh for his defense during a game against the Seibu Lions on August 24.

Yoh blasted two home runs and was responsible for driving in all four runs for Nippon Ham. Down 1-0 in the 3rd, Yoh blasted a three-run home run off Seibu ace Takayuki Kishi. With the score tied at three in the 8th, he recorded his second home run of the game and put the Fighters in front, 4-3, for the last time. Georgia video - Box score

Ninth Georgia Award (2014)

The Ninth Georgia Award for 2014 went to Yoshifumi Okada for his defense during a game against the Seibu Lions on August 10.

Made a nice running catch on a fly ball hit by Ginjiro Sumitani in the 3rd inning with one out.  He also made a nice sliding catch on a fly ball hit to the gap in left-center by the next hitter, Masato Kumashiro.  The Marines edged the Lions, 4-3. Georgia video - Box score
