Matt DeSalvo failed his tryout with the team.

"We decided that we do not need [DeSalvo].  He was not the same pitcher we saw last year.  I think he was throwing a little harder back then.  We have Japanese players that can match his current level right now," said GM Katsuhiro Nakamura.

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Takumi Akiyama threw thirty-nine pitches in the bullpen. (Sanspo)
  • Akira Iwamoto threw thirty-five pitches in the bullpen. (Nikkan Sports)

===

Including his bullpen session on Saturday, Akira Iwamoto has now thrown over 1,600 pitches during spring camp.

===

Yasutomo Kubo (coming back from right shoulder tightness) played catch off the bullpen mound on Saturday before tossing a session with the catcher squatting.  Kubo later told reporters he was feeling ok.

===

Takumi Akiyama is scheduled to make an appearance in Sunday's exhibition game against Chunichi.

===

1st round draft pick Hayata Ito swung at about 200 pitches during soft-toss batting practice (focusing most of the session on his left hand since he is still working his way back from right wrist pain) on his day off on Friday.

===

Masahiro Nakatani swung at about eighty pitches during batting practice on his day off Friday.  He also recorded the session and spent some time reviewing the footage.

===

Yutaka Wada would like the team to win their Tuesday and Sunday games because a Tuesday win will allow them to start the week on a positive note and a Sunday win will be a good way for fans to end their weekends and the players to end their week.

===

Through Friday:

1st round draft pick Ito is 3-for-17 with one RBI over five games.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

=== 11:50pm

Akinobu Mayumi spent about an hour hitting 174 baseballs (with the help of fielding / base-running coach Koji Yamawaki) to Shunsuke Fujikawa, Wei-Chu Lin, and Issei Morita in the outfield today.

===

Daiki Enokida (1st round) threw 46 pitches in the bullpen today (including all 5 of his off-speed pitches).  It was his second bullpen session in as many days.

=== 9:26pm

Ni-gun manager Haruki Yoshitake worked as BP pitcher today and tossed 51 pitches to Fumihito Haraguchi.

===

Jojima played catch from his knees today (29 tosses).  He told reporters it was something he usually does every year when he begins his throwing program to help him check on the use of his upper body.  After that, he stood and played catch at a max distance of about 30 meters (26 tosses).

===

Akiyama threw 53 pitches in the bullpen (squatting catcher) today.  Ni-gun pitching coach Kiyooki Nakanishi suggested Akiyama try to thrown the ball at a downward angle in order to get a little more speed.

=== 4:59pm

Brazell and Matt Murton both took extra BP during lunch time today.  Brazell took 72 swings and hit 23 over the fence.  Murton took 111 swings and connected for consecutive could-be hits at one point.

=== 1:54pm

Even though practice ended ended at 5pm yesterday, a number of players stayed back for extra work (mostly for strength training exercises that included running and weights).  And some of the players that came to the park early ended up working out over 10 hours.

===

Kyuji Fujikawa threw 43 pitches in the bullpen today -- 30 pitches to a standing catcher and 13 (mostly curves) to a sitting catcher.  Fujikawa was thinking about tossing a session yesterday, but decided not to because of a blister on his right middle finger.

===

Kenji Jojima road a mountain bike (as part of his rehab / training) into spring camp yesterday (2km distance between the team hotel and the camp facilities).  He also did some walking / running exercises yesterday - assuming 1 set = 3 minutes of walking and 5 minutes of jogging; 3 sets for a total 15 minutes of walking / running exercises.  After some weight training, Jojima also played catch (42 tosses) outdoors at a max distance of 30 meters.

===

Craig Brazell took 68 swings and hit 11 over the fence (including 9 that were close and hit the fence) during BP yesterday.  Brazell took 45 swings and hit 16 over the fence during his first round of BP last year.  Said Brazell, regarding the new baseball, "I can't really say anything after just one day, but it didn't feel all that different than the baseball from last year.  Besides, that doesn't really matter right now.  I'm not even worried about it, not as much as all of you might think.  And I think we'll begin to find out whether or not the ball is carrying once the season starts."

===

Tomoaki Kanemoto arrived at the stadium an hour earlier than the team bus yesterday.  He also took 120 swings during soft toss BP using a 1kg training bat.  He originally planned on taking 90 swings, but then switched to he right and took 15 swing and then took an additional 15 more from the left.  Kanemoto also threw 35 baseballs into a net.

===

Takumi Akiyama threw 56 pitches in the bullpen yesterday.  He had some trouble with his control and Ni-gun pitching coach Kiyooki Nakanishi told reporters it was because Akiyama wasn't properly balancing his weight during his delivery.

===

Atsushi Nomi threw 71 pitches (all fastballs, from the wind, and with battery coach Yasuo Yoshida standing in the batter's box) in the bullpen yesterday.

===

Takahiro Arai took 73 swings of the bat and hit 11 over the fence during BP yesterday.  He later told reporters it was his first BP session using the new NPB baseball and that it felt completely different (not a lot of bounce to the ball).  His younger brother, Ryota Arai, took 78 swings and hit 3 over the fence (against the win).

===

Takashi Toritani, Yasutomo Kubo, and Keiichi Hirano were the first to arrive at the stadium yesterday (8:40am).

Kubo also told reporters that he wasn't worried about his contract situation at all.

===

Katsuhiko Saka took extra fielding practice in the outfield (with Kohei Shibata) after BP yesterday.

===

Akira Iwamoto (4th round) threw 30 pitches to a standing catcher in the bullpen yesterday.
