Seibu Lions might consider other foreign players

Without knowing when or if players Brian Sikorski, Jose Fernandez, Alex Graman, and Dee Brown will return, the Seibu Lions might begin taking a look at other foreign players.  The team is still hopeful that the four will return sometime before the end of the month, but there's no guarantee.  Because of this, there's a chance the four won't be a part of the opening day roster.

It seems the Lions also think Tatsuya Oishi (1st round) and Yusei Kikuchi need a little more seasoning and may try to pick-up an arm for the starting rotation.

Seibu Lions’ foreign players weren’t given permission to leave

It appears Brian Sikorski, Jose Fernandez, Alex Graman, and Dee Brown left Japan yesterday without the team's permission.  The official line from the front office yesterday was that the players left because their families were concerned about them, but Hisanobu Watanabe told reporters that the club never agreed to let the players leave and that they did so on their own.  And it seems the team isn't even certain if (or when) they'll return.

Brian Sikorski, Alex Graman, Jose Fernandez, and Dee Brown were given permission to leave the team to return to their homes today because their families were concerned for their safety.  The four are expected to return some time before the start of the season.

Today's intra-squad game:

Kazuhisa Makita (2nd round) was a starter and tossed 3 shutout innings while allowing 3 hits.

Fumiya Nishiguchi was the other starter and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits over 3 innings of work.  Nishiguchi had a strong start and ended up allowing all 2 runs and 4 hits in his third inning of work.

===== 2/19 @ 10:09pm

Alex Graman faced G.G. Sato, Haruki Kurose, and Hideto Asamura during BP today and threw 40 pitches while allowing 6 could-be hits.  This was Graman's second BP since the start of spring camp.

Graman is scheduled to make an appearance during a practice game on the 22nd.

The Lions and the Lions' players group announced today that they'll be donating 3M yen to volcano relief efforts in Miyazaki.

===== 2/19 @ 3:56pm

Tatsuya Oishi (1st round) will probably pitch 2 innings during tomorrow's intra-squad game.

Hideto Asamura stayed back for extra fielding and batting practice yesterday.  While Asamura's primary position is shortstop, he's willing to play anywhere in the infield.

The Seibu Lions announced on Wednesday that Brian Sikorski, Alex Graman, Dee Brown, and Jose Fernandez will be returning to their homes later today.

Sikorski: We finished in 2nd this year so I'd like to shoot for the Championships next year.

Fernandez: It's too bad we lost.  I returned to Seibu this year hoping to win.

Brown: I learned a lot this year.  I think I should be able to do better next year.

Graman: I was able to put up any results so I'll be doing a lot of training during the off-season.

Another bad night for Alex Graman

Alex Graman (SEI) had another bad outing last night (0.0 IP, 3 BF, 2 H, 0 SO, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 ER) and it seems the Lions have seen enough.  According to a number of reports, the Lions will take Graman off the active roster later today and call up Takayuki Kishi.

The Lions also appear to be thinking about moving Fumiya Nishiguchi into the bullpen for more support.
