[8/5/2013] Alfonso Soriano, 2,000 hits, and the Meikyukai

Daily Sports conducted an interview with Alfonso Soriano on the possibility of making the Meikyukai.

Have you ever heard of the Meikyukai?

Mei...kyukai?  What is the Meikyukai?

You need 2,000 hits, 200 wins, or 250 saves to make it into the Meikyukai.  For players in Japan, it is a great honor.

Oh, I see.

Your eligibility to the Meikyukai has been a hot topic in Japan lately.

I was given the opportunity to begin my career in the NPB, but I only played for a short time and recorded just two hits.

Sadaharu Oh, Shigeo Nagashima, Ichiro, and Hideki Matsui are all members of the Meikyukai.  How do you feel about the possibility of joining them?

That would be great honor if it were to happen.  Ichiro and Matsui, great players that have managed to record 2,000 hits in Japan and in the Majors.  Only a handful of players can make it.  Making it into that group would be an honor.

When you started your career in Japan, did you ever imagine making it to 2,000 hits?

I never imagined it, but I practiced hard because I wanted to get better and wanted to become the type of player that could [get to 2,000 hits].

What are your thoughts of becoming a Meikyukai member?

My time [in Japan] was very short, but it is the place where I began my career.  It they approve me, then I will gladly become a member.  I would be very lucky.

Alfonso Soriano is three hits away from 2,000 NPB (2) + MLB (1,995) hits. According to the rules of the Meikyukai, he will be eligible to become a member.

"I was not thinking [about the Meikyukai]. I only played a handful of games at Ichi-gun and have not done much of anything in Japan. I can not really see myself there," said Soriano to reporters.

The Meikyukai could make changes to its rules to prevent players with only a short amount of playing time in Japan from becoming eligible.

"For example, we could set a new rule that requires players have at least three to five years playing time in Japan. Right now, there is no such rule. A number of things are being discussed, but nothing will probably be decided until the general meeting in Hawaii in December," said a Meikyukai official.

The rules have been updated before.  In fact, the very rule that makes Soriano eligible was added in 2003 to allow players that begin their careers in Japan the opportunity to make the Meikyukai even if they fall short of 2,000 NPB hits because they spent time playing in the Majors.  Hideki Matsui (1,390 NPB hits and 1,253 MLB hits) is an example of such a player.

According to a report by Sponichi, the Softbank Hawks are interested in thirty-six-year-old Alfonso Soriano.  Soriano still has two years left on his contract, but the Chicago Cubs may move him.  The Hawks might be willing to take on the remaining two years of his contract, if he has has an interest in playing in Japan.

Wily Mo Pena is slated to return next season.  Bryan LaHair was recently signed to a two-year deal with an option for a third year.  Softbank chairman Sadaharu Oh did tell reporters he did not expect the team to move on any additional foreign position players, but Soriano may be the exception.
