The Hawks announced today that they hired Kazuhiro Takeda to be a special temporary pitching coach during spring camp.  Takeda was also hired as a temporary coach during fall camp last year.

Koji Akiyama decided yesterday to send Shuhei Fukuda (right hamstring strain he suffered during base-running exercises) to Saitozaki for rehab.  He was also behind Alex Cabrera taking bunting practice yesterday.

Akiyama also watched Yuki Yanagita (2nd round) go yard a couple times during BP and said, "He's got some power, it's good that he can take full cuts.  He does a good job of pivoting.  At this point, I think he's got the quickest swing of them all.  He has a chance.  This is interesting."

Toru Hosokawa caught three pitchers yesterday: Tsuyoshi Wada, Hideaki Takahashi, and Sho Iwasaki.  Hosokawa also stayed back after general practice for extra BP.

The Softbank Hawks are close to signing 28-year-old RHP Anthony Lerew.  The two sides are apparently working on the final details of a contract and an announcement of a deal could be made soon (Sponichi is figuring a 1-year deal worth around 50M yen).

Lerew was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2001.  He signed with the Kansas City Royals after being released by the Braves in 2009.  He was released by the Royals in October 2010 and signed with the Oakland Athletics in November.
