[6/10/2015] Yomiuri Giants, Nippon Ham Fighters agree to trade

The media learned on June 9 that the Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham Fighters were working on a trade involving four players. According to people with knowledge of the negotiations, the Giants' are planning to send thirty-four-year-old outfielder Kenji Yano and twenty-nine-year-old pitcher Hideki Sunaga to the Fighters for thirty-one-year-old pitcher Toshiyuki Yanuki and twenty-six-year-old outfielder Atsushi Kita. The trade should fill needs for both teams -- Nippon Ham was looking for a right-handed bat and Yomiuri wanted to bolster their bullpen. The two sides could make an official announcement later today.

The Fighters and Giants announced that they finalized a trade. Yomiuri will send Yano and Sunaga head to Nippon Ham for Yanuki and Kita. Both teams also announced uniform numbers for the players.

  • Kazuki Yoshimi tossed batting practice on Thursday for the first time since his surgery in June 2013.  It was the first time he faced hitters since May 7, 2013.  He threw fifty-five pitches.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/4/2014

  • Motohiro Shima was left out of the starting line-up on Friday because the Eagles wanted to give him the night off after he took a foul-tip off his right foot on Thursday.  Source: Sanspo 4/4/2014

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Atsushi Kita hurt his right shoulder while diving after a ball in foul territory in the 7th inning of Thursday's game against Softbank at YafuOku Dome.  He was examined at a hospital in Tokyo on Friday and diagnosed with shoulder inflammation.  He was taken off the active roster on the same day and will begin his rehab at Kamagaya on Sunday.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/4/2014

The 10th Season Home Ceremony took place outside of Sapporo Station today.  About 1,260 fans were in attendance.

The Fighters announced that Saturday's exhibition game against Yakult was pushed back to 3:00pm.  Stadium gates will still open at 12:30pm.

The Swallows had difficulty with their flight into Sapporo because of bad weather.

The Fighters announced that Atsushi Kita had successful surgery on his left shoulder (fracture dislocation).  He will begin a rehab program at Kamagaya after he is discharged from the hospital on the 4th.

Kita hurt the shoulder while playing defense in the 1st inning of a practice game against Yokohama on February 16.

Reporters are still not allowed to hang around 1st round draft pick Shohei Otani for a sound bite.  They are expected to wait until the end of practices to speak to him.

"I am very sorry, but [the interview rule] will remain in effect.  This next month will also be very important.  I would to ask for everyone's cooperation, this way we will all be able to see Shohei pitch and hit on the same day as soon as possible," said Hideki Kuriyama.

Otani threw forty-one pitches during batting practice on Thursday.  He threw twenty pitches to Takahiro Imanami and allowed three could-be hits.  He threw twenty-one pitches to Atsushi Ugumori and allowed one could-be hit.

Otani could play in the following games: as a hitter during a Kyoiku League game against Yomiuri on March 3, in right batting third in an exhibition game against Yomiuri on March 6, and as a pitcher during a Kyoiku League game against Yakult on March 10.

Of the forty-one pitches Otani threw during batting practice: three were swinging strikes, five were called strikes, seven were fouled off.  Of the twenty-six strikes thrown, eleven were hit into fair territory, including the four could-be hits.

Otani took forty-one swings during batting practice on Thursday and collected twenty-two hits, including five that went over the fence.

Otani could pitch in an Kyoiku League game against Yakult on March 10.  Depending on his progress, he could pitch in an Ichi-gun exhibition game against Rakuten on March 21.

Otani graded his spring camp a perfect 100%.

2nd round draft pick Tatsuya Morimoto attended his high school graduation today.  He returned to Kamagaya later in the day and will return to practices on Saturday.  He is expected to play in a Kyoiku League game against Yomiuri on Sunday.

Kuriyama graded spring camp a -10% on Thursday.

"I wanted to show [the players] how hard I was working to create a good environment, but I think I may not have been able to get that feeling across. ... I really wanted [younger players] to step up.  But it is what it is. ... You are expected to do you best in this business.  You need to put up results while doing your best," said Kuriyama.

Nippon Ham Fighters: Atsushi Kita to miss four weeks with shoulder injury

Atsushi Kita hurt his left shoulder while playing defense in a practice game against the Yokohama Bay Stars today.  He was later taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a fracture dislocation in his left shoulder.  He will require four weeks for a full recovery.

Kita started the game at first and suffered the injury while going after a grounder in the 1st inning.

Yokohama Bay Stars send Atsushi Kita to Nippon Ham Fighters for Kenji Tsuchiya

The Nippon Ham Fighters and Yokohama Bay Stars are close to announcing a trade that will sent Kenji Tsuchiya (22) to Yokohama for Atsushi Kita (23).

The Fighters feel Kita has the potential to become the left-handed bat with pop they are looking.  The Bay Stars wanted another young left-handed arm for their starting rotation.

Sports Hochi: Yokohama to send Kita to Nippon Ham For Tsuchiya

According to Sports Hochi, the Yokohama Bay Stars and Nippon Ham Fighters have agreed on a trade that will see Atsushi Kita (23) head to Sapporo for Kenji Tsuchiya (22).

The Bay Stars see Tsuchiya as a possible left-handed arm for the starting rotation.  The Fighters like Kita's hitting potential and they feel a change of scenery might do him some good.
