Takahiro Arai and Shunsuke Watanabe meet Shintaro Ishihara

by on Nov.27, 2010 @ 2:18 pm, under NPB

JPBPA chairperson Takahiro Arai (HAN) and JPBPA vice chairperson Shunsuke Watanabe (LOT) visited Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara on Friday for the JPBPA's Baseball Christmas 2010 in Komazawa press conference.

While the gathering was supposed to be about the event, it seems Ishihara spent some time criticizing the international FA rule and some of the rules governing how much contact NPB players can have with amateur players.

Said Ishihara, "Yakyu is the most closed off sport.  You need to what, wait 10 years* for free agency?  And you can't play games against amateurs, there are like 4-5 of those kinds of things. ... Soccer has move more quickly.  Players go from J2 to J1, from J1 to Europe, they move instantly.  [Yakyu] doesn't have that kind of freedom.  And it isn't like they'll use you in America because you're older.  Tell them like it is, that Yakyu is behind the times. ... I feel sorry for the players.  They have no freedom.  They can only do what they are told.  Inclusive of the free agency rules, it just doesn't compare to soccer."

The press conference / meeting lasted about 15 minutes.  The three also played some catch.

* it's actually 8 years for domestic and 9 years for international.  The JPBPA is currently trying to cut that down to 7 for both.

Around the NPB Horn: Tadahito Iguchi wants to play until he’s 40

by on Dec.07, 2009 @ 1:10 pm, under NPB
Tags:

Chiba Lotte Marines

...Speaking at an event on Sunday, Tadahito Iguchi told about 400 fans that he wants to record 2,000 hits and play until he's 40.

Chunichi Dragons

...Masahiro Yamamoto is focusing all his energy in what could end up being his last season.  To that end, he's also planning on putting aside his other passion in life: RC racing.

Yamamoto has said that he is prepared to call it quits next season if he can't put together a good season.

Hanshin Tigers

...The makers of the Sasebo Burger (out of Sasebo, Nagasaki) are looking to Kenji Johjima for PR help.

Nippon Ham Fighters

...Naoto Inada recorded the last episode of Go! Go! Naoto on Sunday.  Makoto Kaneko made a surprise guest appearance during the episode.

Go! Go! Naoto was a regular mini-segment of a larger program called Zokkon! Sports that airs on STV TV (a station in Sapporo).

The last episode will air on January 30th.

Orix Buffaloes

...The Buffaloes assigned the number 12 to Hiroshi Kisanuki.

Rakuten Eagles

...Katsuya Nomura spoke in front of about 1,300 fans on Sunday.  He's still quite bitter with the Eagles and is apparently ignoring them, despite being hired as an honorary manager.

He was also asked to attend Spring camp in Okinawa to help out some of the younger players, to which Nomura said he would attend, not as an honorary manager, but to do work as a baseball analyst.

Seibu Lions

...Kimiyasu Kudo will be preparing for the 2010 season with the mindset that he'll be used as a reliever.

Softbank Hawks

...It appears as though Nagisa Arakaki decided not to have surgery on his right shoulder during the current off-season.  He tossed a 79-pitch bullpen session on Sunday that provided him with some hope of recovery without surgery.  Sports Hochi is reporting that it was a 99-pitch session.

Yakult Swallows

...Shohei Tateyama will have a 4-page spread covering his training methods in the February edition of Tarzan (hits newsstands on the 17th).

...Masanori Ishikawa wants his salary for the 2010 season to be at least 200M yen.

Yokohama Bay Stars

...The Bay Stars re-signed Shuichi Murata to a contract worth 260M yen (no change) plus incentives.

Yomiuri Giants

...Back during his Lotte days, Masahide Kobayashi had his name registered as Kobayashi Masa, but starting this year, it will simply be, Kobayashi.  He's doing this as a way to start over from scratch.

Kobayashi is just 17 saves away from reaching 250 combined saves (NPB: 227, MLB: 6).

...Sadaharu Oh praised Tatsunori Hara's season at an Giants' Old-Timer's meeting on Sunday.

Baseball Christmas

...One of the themes covered at this year's Baseball Christmas was Japan's Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio and how it hasn't changed much over the last decade or so.  To that end, Hayato Sakamoto pushed washoku (Japanese meals) to the audience.

...Class clown: Hichori Morimoto appeared at Baseball Christmas wearing a girl's school uniform.

...Eri Yoshida made an appearance at the Baseball Christmas 1965 vs 1973 festivities.  She took the mound for the 1965 team during the 1965 vs 1973 game with Atsuya Furuta behind the plate and tossed an shut-out inning while giving up 2 hits.
