Former Nippon Ham Bobby Keppel has signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds, according to a tweet by Baseball America's Matt Eddy on January 12.

The Yomiuri Giants expressed an interest in Jason Bay.  Bay announced his intentions to retire on the 11th.  From SportsNet.ca's Shi Davidi:

"I haven't filed papers or anything yet, but I don't really see a scenario where I would play this year or beyond, really," the 35-year-old from Trail, B.C., told sportsnet.ca Saturday. "I had some offers, and an offer to play in Japan, actually, which could be fun for a life experience. I talked to Kevin Youkilis who's doing it, but taking the whole family over there defeats the purpose of being at home and doing the family thing.

"The writing has been on the wall, I just haven't made it official, per se. This is probably the end of the road."

Vicente Padilla turned down offers from a National League team and an NPB team because he is still not sure how effective he can be (it seems he is having some problems with lower back pain).

The Nippon Ham Fighters announced today that they were parting ways with Bobby Keppel.  He will be returning tot the US on the Thursday.

Statement from Keppel provided by the Fighters:

My family and I became a member of the Fighters four years ago.  I fell in love with Hokkaido from the moment I stepped foot into it.  I wanted to stay here as long as I could, not just as a baseball player, but also as a member of the community.  My family and I want to thank Hokkaido for providing us with a great time.

And to the fans.  I always felt your support.  I tried my best, but it seems it was not enough to help the team and for that I am sorry.  I hope that I can continue to maintain some sort of relationship with you.  I think the Fighters are a great organization and they found a wonderful home in Hokkaido.

Thanks to baseball, I was able to play for the Fighters.  And through the Fighters, I was fortunate to meet all kinds of people.

I will never forget the children from Hokkaido University Hospital and the power they gave me.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all the support over the last four years.

Hector Luna (left knee) was not in the starting line-up tonight against the Yomiuri Giants.

"I need a little more time.  I was thinking about getting back into the line-up for the Hiroshima series [at Mazda Stadium]," said Luna.

Mazda Stadium will probably be easier on Luna's knees with the natural grass field.

Keppel's comment on the decision: "In speaking to my doctor and to the team, the best option was to get the surgery.  I will make sure that I am at 100% for the start of spring camp next year."
