Sponichi notes a Baltimore Sun article that says Baltimore Orioles' development director John Stockstill is in Japan to check on a number of players, including Yu Darvish.  Sponichi also mentions that a number of other clubs, like the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox are expected to catch Darvish's last start of the regular season (currently set for the 18th against the Seibu Lions).

Sponichi goes on to provide the following list of 5 clubs interested in Darvish along with possible reasons why:

  • New York Yankees - could lose C.C. Sabathia; looking for a number of starting arms
  • Boston Red Sox - Daisuke Matsuzaka coming back from TJ surgery; John Lackey's elbow problems; urgent need to find arms for the starting rotation
  • Toronto Blue Jays - increase in payroll
  • Baltimore Orioles - Jeremy Guthrie's bad year; looking for quality arm
  • Texas Rangers - GM checked out Darvish in June; could lose CJ Wilson to FA

Boston Red Sox to sign Itsuki Shoda to a minor league deal

According to Nikkan Sports, the Boston Red Sox will be signing 29-year-old LHP Itsuki Shoda to a minor league deal.

Shoda was the first round draft pick for the Nippon Ham Fighters in 1999.  While Shoda won the Rookie of the Year award in 2002, he never really managed to find success with the Fighters and was ultimately traded to the Hanshin Tigers in 2007 after failing to make it to the active roster two seasons in a row.

Things didn't get much better for Shoda in the Tigers organization and he was released on 10/2/2008.  He attended the 12-team tryouts that year, but could not find any interested clubs in Japan.  He did, however, manage to find a job with the Sinon Bulls of the CPBL and spent the last two seasons with them.

Ryota Igarashi, Mets, Red Sox?

by on Dec.16, 2009 @ 7:47 am, under NPB

So Bart Hubbuch twitters that the Mets offered Ryota Igarashi a 2-year deal.

Sponichi is carrying a story that the Boston Red Sox also offered Igarashi a 2-year deal worth US$2-3M.  The article also adds that the Phillies are in the hunt as well, but that in the end, the Red Sox may be in the lead.

=== UPDATE 8:07am JST

Forgot to include a link about the Mets nearing a deal with Igarashi over at the NY Times that Mike mentioned.

It'll be interesting to see where Igarashi lands.  If he goes to some place like Boston, he'll have a nice group of Japanese players to rely on for some support.  But if he goes to a team like the Mets, he'll have a chance to start his own thing.

Something else to keep in mind...  Igarashi mentioned that he received an offer from a team he wanted to play for.  Which team that is, I have no idea, but that may be the team that ultimately ends up signing him.  My guess is that most teams are pricing him in the same range, which means it may ultimately come down to which team he wants to play for the most, or which team contacted him with a solid offer first.

=== UPDATE 11:11am JST

Sanspo is now picking up the article at the NY Times about the Mets offering a deal to Igarashi.

=== UPDATE 2:29pm JST

Seems like most of the media has now picked up on the Mets being in serious discussions with Igarashi.
