Nippon Ham Fighters sign Buddy Carlyle

by on Nov.17, 2009 @ 4:05 pm, under NPB

The Nippon Ham Fighters announced that they have signed 31-year-old pitcher Buddy Carlyle.

Carlyle was a member of the Hanshin Tigers between 2001 and 2002 and has spent the last 7 years bouncing around between the Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves (including a stint with the LG Twins of the KBO in 2006).  He spent most of his 2009 season in the minor leagues.

The following statement was provided by Carlyle:

"I'm honored for a chance to play with the Nippon Ham Fighters.  The Fighters had a great year by winning the Pacific League title, but I also hear they lost out on their bid at the Nippon Series.  In order to help the team win a Nippon Series next season, I will immediately start my training.  I'm really looking forward to meeting my new teammates and the fans in Hokkaido."

Carlyle went 7-12 during his 2 year stay with the Tigers and finished with a 4.19 ERA (167.2 IP, 78 ER, 1.41 WHIP).  He also struck out 124 while walking 69.
