Regarding the back-end of the Eagles' bullpen, Senichi Hoshino told reporters that he'll use Manabu Mima and Ryan Speier until Romulo Snachez is ready.

Yesterday's intra-squad game:

White beat the reds, 6-3 (7 innings).

The run Takahiro Shiomi (1st round) allowed in his two inning outing was a solo homer to left by Shoji Ohiro in the 2nd inning.  Shiomi also retired the side in order in the first inning (two outs coming on strikeouts); started 6 of 9 batters with strikes; and threw 29 pitches (of which 16 were fastballs).

Akinori Iwamura went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Ginji went 2-for-3, including a 2-run homer to right in the 5th.

===== 2/17 @ 10:23pm

Most of today's practice was held indoors due to the rain.

===

Masahiro Tanaka threw 110 pitches in the bullpen today.

===

Byung-Hyun Kim threw 71 pitches in the bullpen today.  Kim is currently working on trying to release the ball out in front of his body as much as possible.

===== 2/17 @ 5:23pm

It seems some people in the Eagles' organization see Ryan Speier as a possible right-handed version of Jeff Williams.

Nagai: "I will definitely win 15 games this year, I want to my best to put the team above 500.  I want to toss the manage up in the air, let's go on a fun championship vacation."

Tanaka: "Win the league, take the Nippon Series, I will take the opening day start from Iwakuma, and I will do my best to win the Sawamura award."

===

Byung-Hyun Kim threw 32 pitches (including off-speed pitches) in the bullpen yesterday.  For Kim, it was his first bullpen session during spring camp.

Said Kim, "I'm still not quite there yet.  During camp, I'd like to work in regaining my form where I place most of my emphasis on my lower body."

===

The Eagles held outdoor situational fielding practice yesterday for the first time since the start of spring camp (due to bad weather).

The media found out yesterday that Hoshino selected music to be played before and after games.  The two songs he selected: TUBE's Azadarake-no Hero (傷だらけのヒーロー) and GiFT's Shori-no Uta (勝利ノウタ) as pre-game and post-game music.  The team already created the CD's for it (endless loop) and played the music (over and over again) during practice yesterday.

Sponichi: Rakuten Eagles to give Byung-Hyun Kim a tryout

by on Dec.22, 2010 @ 8:08 am, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Sponichi reports that the Rakuten Eagles will be giving 31-year-old RHP Byung-Hyun Kim a tryout during spring camp next year. Kim took a tryout with the club between 11/16 - 11/17 at Kleenex Stadium but didn't really impress the club (his pitches were clocked in the 130km/h range).  But since Senichi Hoshino wasn't present at the tryout, they decided to give him another shot (apparently at the request of Hoshino).

The report continues that there was an article filed with Sports Seoul that said the two sides were actually close to agreeing on a 1-year deal worth US$1M (or about 84M yen).  In response to this claim, Eagles' rep Jun Yoneda said he had nothing to say other than that there was no progress.

Rakuten Eagles: Senichi Hoshino wants more pitching

by on Nov.22, 2010 @ 4:50 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Senichi Hoshino was apparently asked about Seung-Yeop Lee yesterday and said that more than a hitter, he wanted more pitching.

According to Sanspo, the Eagles may have a starting four that includes Masahiro Tanaka, Satoshi Nagai, Darrell Rasner, and Kohei Hasebe.  Hoshino is hoping that two pitchers out of the group of Kenji Tomura, Masafumi Togano, Ryohei Isaka, and Hiroshi Katayama can step up and fill out the rest of the open spots in the rotation.  And if not this, then definitely next year, as Hoshino was also quoted as saying, "It might not be possible for them to get things together by next year, but if there's no improvement over 2 years, that's it."

Incidentally, Hoshino also said that he heard Byung-Hyun Kim did alright during his tryout and said that he wouldn't mind inviting Kim to spring camp.  It seems the Eagles are also willing to set up another tryout for Kim if he wishes to show Hoshino directly what he's capable of doing (Hoshino missed out on Kim's tryouts).

The Eagles may also be thinking of having Juan Morillo attend the Mexican Winter Leagues.

Byung-Hyun Kim tryouts with the Rakuten Eagles begins

by on Nov.17, 2010 @ 12:10 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Byung-Hyun Kim's tryout with the Rakuten Eagles started on Tuesday.  The media apparently only had a chance to watch Kim play catch but they learned that Kim also held a bullpen session for the coaches and threw 10 pitches to a squatting catcher (Sanspo mentions that Kim threw about 40 pitches in total).

Reactions amongst the coaches seem to be a little mixed.  Pitching coach Yoshinori Sato said he needed to see more than 10 pitches to gauge ability, but batting coach Kochi Tabuchi seems a little more upbeat about Kim's potential.

Kim told reporters that he felt about as good as he's ever felt over the last three years and that he would improve with practice.

Kim's tryout will continue today.
