Hanshin Tigers

  • Ryota Arai (lower back) took seventy-three swings during batting practice at Naruohama on Tuesday and hit three over the fence. He also took fielding practice at third base. Source: Sanspo 9/24/2014
  • Ryota Imanari (right side) started taking grounders at third base during workouts at Naruohama on Tuesday. The session lasted about twenty minutes. He told reporters he was at fifty to sixty percent. Source: Sanspo 9/24/2014

Softbank Hawks

  • The Hawks announced on Wednesday that Shinsuke Tobo will undergo reconstructive surgery on the medial collateral ligament in his left elbow on Thursday. Rakuten Eagles

  • Nine players, including Andruw Jones, have recorded 100 or more strikes and walks twelve times in NPB history. Jones is the first to record 100 or more strikeouts and walks in back-to-back seasons (2013, 2014). Source: Sponichi 9/23/2014

Chiba Lotte Marines

  • Craig Brazell had inguinal hernia surgery in the United States on July 30. He has been rehabbing since then, but is apparently no closer to being able to establish a time frame for his return. The Marines will most likely part ways with Brazell since they are not sure when he will be ready to play. Source: Sports Hochi 9/23/2014
  • The Marines are planning to part ways with Seth Greisinger. Greisinger had problems with his right shoulder and is planning to have surgery during the off-season. The veteran pitcher has reportedly told people around him that he will either return to Japan to play next year, or retire. Softbank Hawks

  • The Hawks plan to send their everyday players to the Phoenix League in Miyazaki to keep them sharp if they finish the season in first place. They  may also be able to schedule practice games against other NPB teams in Miyazaki, like Hiroshima and Yomiuri. Source: Nikkan Sports 9/23/2014

  • Four pitchers combined to record strikeouts against every hitter in the batting order during Sunday's game against the Seibu Lions (nine hitters since there were no substitutions). It was the seventeenth time in NPB history one or more pitcher struck out every hitter in the batting order; and the third time in franchise history one or more pitcher struck out every hitter in the batting order. Rakuten Eagles

  • Takahiro Norimoto set a new franchise record on Friday by recording his seventh shutout of the season. The previous record of six was set by Masahiro Tanaka in 2009. Norimoto is the first pitcher in the NPB to notch seven shutouts in a season since Masaki Saito recorded seven in 1989. The last Pacific League pitcher to record seven or more shutouts in a season was Keiji Suzuki with eight in 1978. Source: Sponichi 9/19/2014

Softbank Hawks

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • The Fighters have informally decided to make Shohei Otani their opening pitcher for the First Stage of the Climax Series (assuming they make it that far). Until then, he will most likely get two more starts during the regular season: on the 21st against Rakuten at kobo Stadium and during a five-game stretch at Sapporo Dome that begins on the 27th. He could get a tune-up outing during the Phoenix League that begins on October 6. The First Stage of the Climax Series is scheduled to start on October 11. Source: Daily Sports 9/19/2014 ... If Otani starts game one of the First Stage of the Climax Series, it would allow him to start either game three or four of the Final Stage of the Climax Series on five or six days of rest.
