[7/15/2014] Injury Report: Hector Luna (Chunichi), Sho Nakata (Nippon Ham)

Hiroshima Carp

  • 1st round draft pick Daichi Osera took a batted ball off his left calf during the 4th inning of Monday's game against Yokohama.  He left the game after six full innings because the calf was beginning to tighten up. Chunichi Dragons

  • Yohei Oshima (right side) returned to practices on Tuesday.  He did not play catch or take batting practice in the cages.  He did field some grounders, work on his bunts, and hit some soft-toss batting practice. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/15/2014
  • Hector Luna was supposed to get an MRI for his right elbow, but turned it down because the machine made him uncomfortable (it was too small, it hurt his shoulder).  Luna wants for focus on treatment for the pain and inflammation so he can return to the active roster in ten days.  Head coach Shigekazu Mori told reporters doctors could not find any inflammation in his x-rays.  They decided to take Luna off the active roster because they had no solid leads on how long it might take for him to recover. Chiba Lotte Marines

  • 1st round draft pick Ayumu Ishikawa's start was cut short on Monday because of a cramp near the base of his right thumb.  He experienced a similar cramp last year during the Industrial League Championships. Source: Sports Hochi 7/15/2014

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Haruki Nishikawa hurt his right middle finger while returning to second base on a pick-off attempt in the 4th inning of Tuesday's game against Seibu.  He was removed from the game on defense in the 5th. Source: Sponichi 7/15/2014 ... Nishikawa was taken to a hospital and diagnosed with a sprain in the PIP joint of his right middle finger.  He is considered day-to-day. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/15/2014
  • Sho Nakata was left out of the starting line-up on Tuesday against Seibu because of left knee pain.  He was hit by a pitch on the knee during a game against Lotte on the 6th.  He has had problems with the knee since and was told by doctors to rest it. Source: Sports Hochi 7/15/2014 ... Nakata did make it into the game as a pinch-hitter in the 9th on Tuesday and flied out to right. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/15/2014

Yomiuri Giants

  • Itaru Hashimoto (left thigh) played in a Ni-gun rehab game against Lotte on Tuesday.  He got the start in center and batted third.  He went 3-for-5 with three RBI.  He told reporters he was at about ninety percent. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/8/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka (right elbow) could return to the starting line-up on the 10th against the Hiroshima Carp at Koshien. Source: Sports Hochi 7/8/2014
  • Atsushi Nomi (left side) will probably toss a couple more bullpen sessions before a possible start on the 13th.  He will most likely begin throwing breaking/off-speed pitches during his next session. Source: Sponichi 7/8/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • 1st round draft pick Daichi Osera took a batted ball off his right hand during Tuesday's game against Hanshin.  With a runner on first and one out, Yamato hit a ball back to the mound that hit Osera near the base of the thumb and index finger.  He was removed from the game as a precaution.   • Ryuji Ichioka (right shoulder) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Hanshin on Tuesday.  He entered the game in the 7th and gave up two runs (none earned) on one hit over an inning of work.  He topped out at 144km/h. Source: Sports Hochi 7/8/2014, Nikkan Sports 7/8/2014

Yakult Swallows

  • Yasuhiro Ogawa (right hand) joined the Ichi-gun team for workouts on Tuesday.  He is could get a start on the 12th against Yokohama at Jingu Stadium. Source: Sponichi 7/8/2014
  • Wladimir Balentien (left Achilles tendon) worked out at the Ni-gun facilities in Toda, Saitama on Tuesday.  During outdoor batting practice, he swung the bat 100 times and hit twenty-one over the fence.  He could return to the active roster in time for a game against Yokohama at Jingu on the 13th. Yusuke Nomura tossed a bullpen session on Monday.  He threw a shuto he learned how to throw from former teammate Kan Otake.

1st round draft pick Daichi Osera knew that the NPB strike zone was half a baseball to a whole baseball narrower than what he was used to.  He was able to check the zone on Sunday since he had an umpire working his bullpen session.  Hanshin and Chunichi scouts watched the session and were impressed with his control.

Osera walked to and from the stadium for the first two days of spring camp.  He then purchased a bike for about 10,000 yen and started riding the distance on Monday.

There was a bit of a scare on Sunday when Osera felt something in his right calf while running a 200-meter.  He was apparently fine, but his say was cut a bit short to be on the safe side.

The media learned that Rainel Rosario (24) has a wife that is eighteen years older than he is.  Daily Sports adds that there have been two other foreign players in the past that have done well in Japan with older wives: Roberto Petagine and Alex Ramirez.
