[1/6/2014] Jumbo taxi carrying six NPB players crashes into guard rail

A jumbo taxi carrying six NPB players crashed into a guard rail on National Route 56 at around 11:53am this morning.  Orix's Takahiro Matsuba (23), Lotte's Daichi Suzuki (24), Nippon Ham's Shota Ono (26) and Masahiro Inui (25), and Seibu's Ryo Hayashizaki (25) and Hitoto Komazuki (20) were riding in the taxi on their way to a stadium in Sukumo for workouts from Kochi Ryoma Airport at the time accident.  The driver and six players were rushed to a hospital and were either diagnosed with no injuries or minor injuries (Matsuba suffered a bruise on his left wrist).  Sukumo police are still investigating possible causes for the accident.

[UPDATE 1/7 @ 4:51pm]

A couple of updates:

  • The jumbo taxi was big enough to fit ten passengers.
  • The driver lost control after the tire hit a curb.  The car then came into contact with a pedestrian street signal before crashing into a guard rail.  The car bumper suffered impact damage, the headlights were broken, and the vehicle was no longer operational.
  • Five of the six players suffered minor scuffs and scrapes.  Matsuba was diagnosed with a bruise on his left wrist.  All six players attended a welcoming ceremony at Sukumo Baseball Field after their visit to the hospital.
  • Matsuba will undergo a full examination in Kobe.

[UPDATE 1/7 @ 8:33pm]

Some more updates:

  • The car lost control after hitting the curb on the left side.  It came into contact with two pedestrian street signals before crashing into a guard rail.
  • Matsuba was sitting in the driver's side seat.
  • The driver did not suffer any injuries.
  • Matsuba had some swelling in his wrist on Monday.  The swelling was gone today and he was able to play some catch.  He is still slated for an examination at a hospital in Kobe on Wednesday.

Matsuba was examined in Kobe today and given the same diagnosis he got on Monday.  He will return to Sukumo to continue his workouts.
