Chunichi Dragons: Brad Bergesen could take Daniel Cabrera’s spot in starting rotation [3/5/2013]

by on Mar.05, 2013 @ 11:52 pm, under NPB
Tags: , , ,

The media learned on Monday that Daniel Cabrera may not be ready for opening day.  Brad Bergesen, however, might be able to take his place -- he is scheduled to start a Kyoiku League game against Hanshin at Naruohama on the 8th.

Cabrera suffered a few setbacks during spring camp that cut back on his training time and the Dragons feel he may be ill-prepared to last a full season in the starting rotation.  Bergesen, on the other hand, has been working diligently and team officials feel he might be able to find a spot in the rotation, even though they considered him a reliever.  Chunichi will use his Kyoiku League game to see if he can be used as a starter.

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Thursday

  • Shinji Iwata: batting practice, sixty-five pitches, all fastballs
  • Takuya Asao and Daisuke Yamai: about fifty pitches
  • Hitoki Iwase: about thirty pitches
  • Kenichi Nakata: fifty-three pitches

Daniel Cabrera apparently asked Takagi what pitchers do when they hit batters.  Takagi explained that it was customary for pitchers to tip their cap and apologize.  He also added that he wanted Cabrera to do the same.

Cabrera later jokingly said to reporters, "I did not come all this way from the Dominican Republic to hit batters.  I will tip my cap."

Incidentally, Takagi was a little bewildered at the question and said, "If he had to come out and ask me, then he must have [hit a lot of batters] in the past."

Note - Sponichi is carrying the following reaction from Cabrera: "Batters will not come after me because they know what will happen to them (likely referring to his size and to his black belt in Taekwon-Do).  But I will do as the manager said."
