Don Nomura spoke at a seminar at Waseda on Monday and talked a little more about what happened during Hisashi Iwakuma's negotiation talks with the Oakland A's.

With only 1 year left before international FA, we didn't have much leverage.  If they're going to take advantage of that, then it's better to stay [in Japan].  From here on out, current system won't be good for players with 1 year left before international FA.

Nomura also apparently said that he was looking for a 3-year deal worth US$24M plus incentives.

Regarding salary arbitration, Nomura said the JPBPA needed to work harder to standardize the ways NPB teams assessed their players.

Don Nomura speaks out against the NPB

by on Jan.23, 2011 @ 6:41 pm, under NPB

Don Nomura spoke against the NPB at a seminar in Tokyo on Saturday.  Amongst the thing he talked about:

How unfair the salary arbitration system was (heavily favors teams).  He also said he felt sorry for Hideaki Wakui.

The player - agent system in the NPB is limited to lawyers (there actually aren't any "agents" in Japan, just lawyers that have been approved by the JPBPA).

International FA requirements are too long at 9 years and that players could probably put together an antitrust case.

Regarding Hisashi Iwakuma's contract negotiations with the A's, Nomura once again said it had nothing to do with money and everything to do with sincerity.  He also said that Iwakuma probably would have signed with the A's had GM Billy Beane visited him in Japan.
