Masahiro Yamamoto is planning to toss more breaking pitches this year.  He usually does not begin tossing breaking pitches during bullpen sessions until he has thrown about 800 fastballs.  His reason: he is no longer confident about stamina and believes breaking pitches will allow him to conserve some energy.

Chunichi Dragons

Hector Luna is seriously considering surgery because the pain in his right knee was becoming unbearable.  He visited a number of hospitals in Japan and was told he could hold off on surgery and get pain-killers to help him through the pain.  That would have been a viable option, except the pain had a tendency to come back much stronger after the pain-killers wore off.

"I was told the same thing a number of times, but the pain was getting worse after the pain-killers wore off," said Luna.

He added, "The pain was unbearable.  When I swung at pitches, I did not think it would be possible to continue."

Even if Luna goes under the knife, he plans to play in the Dominican Winter League in December.  He promised the organization he would be at Spring camp, beginning on the first day.

The Dragons officially announced today that Luna will return to the Dominican Republic to get treatment for his right knee.  A return to the active roster this season is unlikely.  The team and Luna are still working out a schedule.

"I have decided to return to the Dominican Republic for testing and treating [my right knee].  I feel badly for leaving my teammates in the middle of the season and being a distraction.  I will get better and return next season," said Luna in a prepared statement provided to the media through the team.

Yomiuri Giants

Yoshinobu Takahashi may have tweaked his left calf during his pinch-hit at bat in the 8th inning.  He was initially set to remain in the game in left, but was pulled as a precaution -- he suffered a calf strain at the start of the season this year and the Giants were concerned he might re-injure it.

Chunichi Dragons

Hector Luna wants to have surgery on his right knee -- he is more interested in getting better than trying to win a batting title this season.  He is expected to meet with the Dragons within the next couple of days to discuss options.

Luna was re-examined at a hospital in Nagoya on the 21st and given the same diagnosis: inflammation in his right patellar ligament.

Wily Mo Pena began his rehab at the Saitozaki training facilities on Thursday.  Workouts included running and soft-toss batting practice.

"Right now I am trying trying to get a good feel for things by swinging the bat as much as I can.  I plan to play in a [rehab] game next Tuesday.  I want to get myself ready for Ichi-gun by playing in a few games," said Pena.

He added, "I was not able to do much hitting up until now because of pain in my knee, but I want to do my best to help the team get to the playoffs and Nippon Series."

Heard it through the grapevine: Wily Mo Pena's surgery to repair his right meniscus went well.  He is making good progress with his rehab and he will likely return to Japan before the end of the month.  The fully repaired knee should allow Pena to swing the bat with authority again and give the Hawks a nice boost during the stretch run.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Tadahito Iguchi was left out of the starting line-up last night for the third game in a row because of pain in his right elbow.

"I had it checked out at a hospital [on the 13th] and doctors told me it was not fatigue-related.  They said it was similar to what some tennis players suffer from. ... I should be fine if I am needed as a pinch-hitter," said Iguchi.
