Hiroyuki Kobayashi posted a message on his Facebook account announcing his decision to retire.
Thank you for allowing me to play for the Chiba Lotte Marines, Hanshin Tigers, Anaheim Angels, Gunma Diamond Pegasus, Shinano Grandserows, and Seibu Lions.
I was able to lead a career without any regrets because I had the support of a lot of people.
I would now like to take on the challenge of learning more about baseball by experiencing it from different angles.
To everyone that supported Kobayashi Hiroyuki through the years, thank you very much.
And I look forward to your support in the time to come.

Hiroyuki Kobayashi was released by the Angels on Monday. From the LA Times' Mike DiGiovanna:
Hiroyuki Kobayashi has shown a decent split-fingered fastball, which he used to strike out two batters in Sunday's split-squad game against the Chicago Cubs.
But he apparently didn't show enough of a fastball to stick with the Angels, who released the Japanese right-hander Monday morning.
... Kobayashi's agent, Alan Nero, said the Angels released the pitcher because he had virtually no chance of making the team, and the Angels wanted to give him a better chance of catching on with another club.
Junichi Tazawa finalized a one-year deal with Boston Red Sox on Monday.

According to Sponichi, the Chiba Lotte Marines are looking into a couple of former players: Naoyuki Shimizu (Yokohama; senryokugai on Thursday) and Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Hanshin; likely to become senryokugai)
Said Nobuhira Hayashi, director of team operations, "I have not received any internal updates ... They are our former aces. [Shimizu] was once a player rep and [H. Kobayashi] did leave via a free agency, but we have no restrictions on reacquiring players. ... It hurts that they do not have recent performance stats. For veteran players, it is not about three years down the road, but what they do for us next year."
