The Tacoma News Tribune's Bob Dutton tweeted that Hisashi Iwakuma "won't begin throwing for three more weeks." Source: Twitter 3/1/2014

And from MLB.com's Greg Johns:

... Iwakuma was examined by hand specialist Dr. Donald Sheridan about two and a half weeks after reporting to camp with a sprained tendon in the middle finger on his throwing hand.

The Mariners said Sheridan reported the finger was healing well, but he recommended the splint protecting Iwakuma's injury be left on another three weeks before the righty begins throwing again. That would leave the 32-year-old only about a week before the start of the regular season.

Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said earlier Friday that Iwakuma has kept himself in good baseball condition by doing everything possible, with the exception of throwing a baseball, since he can't grip a ball with his finger in the splint.

... Griffin noted that Iwakuma's splitter -- using a wide grip between his pointer finger and middle digit -- puts more strain on the injured tendon.

The latest on Hisashi Iwakuma, from MLB.com's Greg Johns:

... Iwakuma will see a doctor on Friday to have his finger reexamined after injuring the tendon in the middle digit of his throwing hand when he caught it in a net while doing drills prior to the start of camp. The initial estimate was that the standout right-hander would be out 4-6 weeks and manager Lloyd McClendon is waiting to see where that stands.

"We'll keep our fingers crossed, no pun intended," he said. "It would be great [if he is ahead of schedule], but we'll just wait and see."

Source: MLBlogs 2/27/2014

And from a separate article posted on Sunday by Johns:

Injured Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma did some dry work on a bullpen mound Sunday, going through his throwing motion first without a ball and then using a towel wrapped around his hand.

... Sunday's drills were designed to at least help keep his arm in throwing shape.

Hisashi Iwakuma has a strained tendon in his right middle finger.  From the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish:

... On Monday, Iwakuma met with hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan in Arizona and was diagnosed with strained tendon in the middle finger of his right throwing hand.

"Lucikly, this does not appear to be a serious injury," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "It is a setback for Kuma, but we are confident that he will quickly overcome the missed time and be able to rejoin our rotation early in the regular season."

Iwakuma said through his translator Antony Suzuki that he injured the finger during a workout on January 20 in California with some ex-teammates.  He was playing catch and  jumped up to catch a ball that was thrown high. As he was coming down, he reached back with his free hand and got his finger trapped in the netting of a protective screen behind him.

Kyuji Fujikawa will report to spring training on the 14th.  He will be doing the same kind of workouts as the others, with the main exception being his throwing program.  He hopes to toss a bullpen session before the end of the month.

Trey Hillman told Sponichi that he believes that pitching alongside Hiroki Kuroda will be great for Tanaka.  In Kuroda, he gets one of the best examples of a Japanese starting pitcher that successfully adjusted to a change in culture and leagues.  Hillman also said he was asked to join team officials for their meeting with Tanaka in Los Angeles at the last minute.  During the meeting, he gave the righty an overview of the organization, GM Brian Cashman provided details about the history of the franchise, Pitching Coach Larry Rothschild went over the scouting report they compiled on him, and Manager Joe Girardi spoke about his potential role.  Source: Sponichi 2/12/2014

Travel agencies in Japan are beginning to offer baseball tour packages.  H.I.S. has a five-day New York baseball package that includes up to two tickets for Yankee games between April 7 and June 29 (one ticket is optional and requires an extra fee).  BATNAT has also put together an American Baseball Opening Series tour package that begins in Texas on March 31 (Philadelphia vs Texas) and ends in Houston on April 3 (New York vs Houston).  Source: Nikkan Sports 2/13/2014

The New York Post's Kevin Fasick recounts Tanaka's movements from his hotel to Teterboro Airport on Tuesday evening.

... The 25-year-old athlete had been whisked from the swanky Mandarin Oriental hotel in Midtown after 4 p.m. — with his wife, Japanese pop star Mai Satoda, brown toy poodle Haru and a small entourage in tow — to head to the airport.

The group made the short road trip in a chaufeurred black Lincoln Navigator, while another Mercedes van transported their suitcases and boxes of belongings.

They arrived at the airport’s Atlantic Aviation terminal just after 5 p.m.

The New York Yankees have made Hiroki Kuroda an offer.  From ESPN's Andrew Marchand:

The Yankees have extended an offer to starter Hiroki Kuroda in an attempt to entice the right-hander to pitch one more season in the Bronx instead of retiring or returning to Japan to play, a source with knowledge of the discussions told ESPNNewYork.com.

The exact figure of the one-year offer is unknown, but it is expected to be in the $15 million to $16 million range. Kuroda, 38, made $15 million in 2013. Prior to free agency, he turned down the Yankees' qualifying offer of $14.1 million.

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in Tomokazu Oka.  From MASN's Roch Kubatko:

Is there a real possibility that the Orioles will sign Tomo Ohka?

Quite real. Earlier this week, I passed along a report from Japan that the Orioles were interested in Ohka, and I can't find anyone who disputes it. He's Japanese. He's a converted knuckleballer. He has ties to Duquette. It's the perfect storm. Stay tuned.

The Baltimore Orioles will not attempt to re-sign Tsuyoshi Wada.  From MASN Sports' Roch Kubatko:

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed today that the club won't attempt to re-sign free-agent pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada after declining to pick up his $5 million option for 2014.

... The Orioles chose not to recall Wada as rosters expanded in September, mostly because they didn't want to experiment with him while in a pennant race.

Duquette had indicated that the Orioles would attempt to re-sign Wada at a reduced rate, perhaps hoping that he'd accept a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, but it's not going to happen. Apparently, the Orioles didn't attempt to negotiate with him.

"I think that the Wada chapter is over with the Orioles," Duquette said. "We're just going in another direction."

The latest on Yu Darvish's back, from MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan:

... Darvish, who finished this past season experiencing inflammation in his lower back, was examined by Dr. Drew Dossett this week while in Texas and underwent an MRI. The results showed that the inflammation from the nerve irritation has subsided.

Darvish will continue with his conditioning program and be able to go through his normal offseason throwing program without any issues. He will work out in Texas for the next few days before returning to Japan.

The LA Times' Mike DiGiovanna feels the Angels might have a strong interest in Rakuten Masahiro Tanaka.  A snip:

... The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Tanaka, who features a 94-mph fastball, sharp slider and a superb split-fingered fastball, won't come cheap. If the Eagles, as expected, post Tanaka, it could cost a major league team $25 million or more just to obtain the rights to negotiate a deal with him.

Tanaka, 24, could be worth it. Two scouts who have seen Tanaka pitch but are not authorized to speak publicly about him said that although Tanaka might not be in Texas ace Yu Darvish's class, he could be as good as or better than Hiroki Kuroda, who is 68-68 with a 3.37 earned-run average in six big league seasons.

"I don't think he has the creativity and the multiple weapons of Darvish, but Kuroda is a really good comparison," one scout said. "He has three good pitches, and his splitter is a legitimate out pitch."

Source: LA Times 9/16/2013 via Sponichi 9/19/2013

The Dodgers are also interested.  From ESPNLosAngeles.com's Mark Saxon:

The Dodgers, like the Angels, have scouted Japanese right-handed pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, according to a source. Tanaka is 21-0 with a 1.24 ERA for the Rakuten Eagles and he could benefit from what is a mediocre crop of free-agent pitchers on the market this fall.

... Speculation is that teams could have to pay $25 million or more to Tanaka’s team just to win the right to negotiate with him.
