[9/2/2013] IBAF 18U Baseball World Cup – Yuki Matsui strikes out twelve in first start

Tags: ,

Yuki Matsui started Japan's first game at the IBAF 18U Baseball Tournament in Taiwan on Saturday.  He gave up one run (earned) on three hits and seven walks over eight innings of work.  He also struck out twelve.  Japan beat Taiwan, 4-1.

Inning by Inning

1st inning - BB, Kl, BB, G4 (DP)

2nd inning - Ks, G4, BB, Ks

3rd inning - Ks, G5, Ks

4th inning - Fo2, F6, G4

5th inning - BB, Ks and CS, BB, G4

6th inning - 1B, SH2, BB, FC, Kl

7th inning - Ks, Kl, Ks

8th inning - F6, K2, 1B, BB, 2B (RBI), HBP, Ks

Sanspo posted portions of Matsui's post-game interview.

You won your first international game.

I was not great out there, but I was able to throw my pitches in tight spots.

You gave up one run.

I was not nervous, but I was a little excited in the first inning and put two runners on base with walks.  But then I managed to get a double play.

Taiwan's cheer group was pretty loud.

I experienced something similar at the Kanagawa tournament so it did not bother me.

Taiwan argued about the fly ball to left.

I tried to get one in and it came out flat...  I saw [the ball] veer away, but I was worried about a reversal.  The umps said it was foul though.  I was able to regain my composure there.

You did not allow any hits through five innings.

I was walking hitters so I was not thinking about that.

What did you think of the international ball?

The seems were high and low, it did not seem like there was a standard.  Each ball I got felt different.

One the team winning its first game.

The one thing starting pitchers are supposed to do is get the win.  I am glad we won.  I would like to pass on my experiences to the other pitchers to help in the next game.
