[2/1/2015] Inter-league to determine which league begins draft

by on Feb.02, 2015 @ 3:52 am, under NPB
Tags: ,

Inter-league rewards have changed this season. The team with the top overall winning percentage during Inter-league play will receive five million yen. The six teams in the league that records the most wins will also get money, based on winning percentage. From first place to sixth: ten million yen, five million yen, four million yen, three million yen, two million yen, and one million yen.

The Inter-league MVP will be selected from the first place team in the league that recorded the most wins. One Nihon Seimei Award winner will be selected from each league.

This year's draft will also begin with the league that records the most wins during Inter-league play.

The NPB formed a committee to handle ideas on how to shorten the length of games. The committee will be made up of officials from Chunichi, Yakult, Orix, Seibu, and the NPB. The first meeting is slated to take place in February. Ideas could be put into motion on an evaluation basis during the Phoenix League in October and implemented into the league next year.

[8/11/2014] Pacific League agrees to cut in Inter-league schedule

by on Aug.11, 2014 @ 9:32 pm, under NPB
Tags:

The NPB held a twelve-team representative meeting in Tokyo earlier today to discuss the Central League's request to reduce the Inter-league schedule.  The CL has been pushing for a reduction in games from twenty-four games to eighteen because of scheduling problems.  The Pacific League was given more time to reconsider the issue after both sides failed to reach an agreement during a meeting earlier this month.  The PL agreed to the first cut in the Inter-league schedule since 2007.

Beginning next year, each team will play six three-game series, one each against teams in the opposite league.  Home stadiums will alternate every year.

Source: Nikkan Sports 8/11/2014, Sponichi 8/11/2014

[UPDATE @ 10:06pm]

The season will be 143 games long -- 125 regular season games and 18 Inter-league games.

Source: Daily Sports 8/11/2014

[UPDATE @ 10:45pm]

The meeting ran over three hours.

Just couple of things to note that were omitted above:

  • The PL was not fully on board with the decision.  One or more teams were concerned because some fans are against the reduction.
  • The PL ultimately agreed to the cut in the Inter-league schedule because the NPB is trying to finish the entire season (including Nippon Series) before the end of October.  This will allow Samurai Japan to begin making preparations for international games/tournaments in early November.

[8/4/2014] Inter-league schedule discussions to continue, leagues still split

by on Aug.05, 2014 @ 12:13 am, under NPB
Tags:

Representatives from the twelve NPB teams met in Tokyo on Monday.  Among the issues discussed was the Inter-league schedule.

The Central League (CL) has been pushing to shorten the schedule from twenty-four games to eighteen because they feel there is not enough time, especially when they have to consider rescheduling rained out games toward the end of the season.  The CL also wants to make sure players have enough time to rest and prepare for the international games in November.

The representatives will meet again after the Pacific League (PL) has had a chance to reconsider.

Source: Sports Hochi 8/4/2014

[UPDATE 8/5 @ 11:37am]

Some updates:

  • In addition to reducing games from twenty-four to eighteen, the CL is also proposing a change from two two-game series to one three-game series.
  • By reducing the games, the CL believes the entire season, including the Nippon Series, can end before the end of October.  This should give Samurai Japan players enough time to rest and prepare for the international games in November.
  • The PL understands the CL's concerns about the schedule and might be willing to go along with the reduction.
