Yomiuri Giants

Hiroshima Carp

  • Ryuji Ichioka (right shoulder) tossed thirty-nine pitches in the bullpen on Thursday.  It was his second session since his injury.  He is scheduled to pitch in a batting practice scrimmage on the 29th. Source: Daily Sports 6/27/2014
  • The Carp decided not to add Shota Dobayashi (right ring finger) to the active roster until he is fully prepared.  The finger may be fine, but Kenjiro Nomura feels Dobayashi needs a little more time to get his swing back.  Nomura also wants to make sure the timing is right. Chunichi Dragons

  • Ryosuke Hirata twisted his left ankle while chasing down a ball in foul territory during the 5th inning of Friday's game against Hanshin.  He could not walk and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.  He went to a hospital in Nishinomiya for an examination.  The team trainer told reporters it was a sprain.  He will most likely be taken off the active roster. Yakult Swallows

  • The Swallows are hoping Yasuhiro Ogawa (right hand) can return to the active roster during a nine-game stretch that begins on July 8. Source: Sponichi 6/27/2014 ... Ogawa started a Ni-gun game against Yomiuri on Friday.  He pitched three shutout innings, gave up one hit, struck out three, and topped out at 147km/h.  It was his first game since April 18. Softbank Hawks

  • Seiichi Uchikawa (right gluteus maximus) joined the Ichi-gun team for practices at YafuOku Dome for the first time in about a month.  He hit six over the fence during batting practice.  He will most likely be used as a designated hitter until his injury is fully healed (he told reporters he was at about eighty percent). Orix Buffaloes

  • Chihiro Kaneko took a batted ball off the area near his left calf during the 6th inning of Friday's game against Lotte.  He managed to stay in the game, but was pulled as a precaution after the 7th inning. Source: Nikkan Sports 6/27/2014

  • Hirokazu Sawamura (right shoulder) will most likely join the Ichi-gun team after Inter-league play ends. Source: Sponichi 6/17/2014 ... Sawamura started a Ni-gun game against Seibu on Tuesday.  He gave up three runs on eight hits over seven innings of work.  He threw ninety-one pitches and topped out at 148km/h.   • Itaru Hashimoto (left thigh) might be ready to return to the active roster, but Tatsunori Hara does not want to take any chances and plans to keep him at Ni-gun until he is fully recovered.  That could mean a return some time after Inter-league play. Source: Sanspo 6/17/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka played in a Ni-gun rehab game against Rakuten on Tuesday.  He was the starting designated hitter and batted lead-off.  He recorded a hit from the right side and stole a base. Source: Sports Hochi 6/17/2014 ... Nishioka went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Takayuki Kajitani was left out of the starting line-up on Tuesday because of pain in the back of his left knee.  He suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Softbank Hawks. Source: Sponichi 6/17/2014 ... Kajitani made it into Tuesday's game as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 8th.  He hit a double and was replaced by a pinch-runner.
  • Yoshitomo Tsutsugo's right calf is not 100 percent. Source: Sponichi 6/17/2014 ... Tsutsugo will be taken off the active roster on Wednesday with tightness in the back of his right thigh. Yakult Swallows

Hanshin Tigers

  • Hiroki Uemoto played some catch, fielded some grounders, and took some soft-toss batting practice at Naruohama on Tuesday for the first time since he suffered a fracture in his right thumb during a game against the Yakult Swallows on the 3rd. Source: Sanspo 5/14/2014 ... Uemoto resumed outdoor batting practice on Wednesday.  He took 110 swings and hit two over the fence. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/14/2014
  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka asked the Tigers for a month.  He spent that time working out at facilities near his house and at Koshien.  He purposely kept his rehab quiet because he felt his teammates had nothing positive to gain by watching him. Source: Daily Sports 5/14/2014 ... Nishioka has reportedly told people he was trying to shoot for a return in mid-June.  June 27 against Chunichi at Koshien could be a possibility. Hiroshima Carp

  • Katsuhiro Nagakawa took a ball hit by Yamato off his left calf in the 9th inning of Wednesday's game against the Hanshin Tigers.  He was replaced after facing the next batter.  He later told reporters he still felt pain and was not sure about his status moving forward. Chunichi Dragons

  • Kazuki Yoshimi's comeback hit a bump in the road when he started experiencing lower back pains on the 7th.  The Dragons are still not sure when he will be ready to resume throwing off a mound -- he can play some catch, but only at a distance of about twenty meters.  His return to the active roster might get pushed back to some time in late-June, at the earliest. Rakuten Eagles

  • Manabu Mima started a Ni-gun game against Yomiuri on Tuesday.  He gave up three runs on six hits over six innings of work.  Twelve of the eighteen outs he recorded came on the ground.  He threw eighty pitches, faced twenty-four hitters, hit two, and struck out four.  His next start will likely come on the 20th against Ni-gun Lotte.  This was his first Ni-gun rehab game since he took a batted ball off the right side of the lower abdomen during a Lotte game on April 29.  Source: Sports Hochi 5/14/2014

  • Itaru Hashimoto was taken off the active roster on Friday with a strain in his left biceps femoris muscle.  He reported to the Ni-gun facilities for treatment and told reporters he was fine. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/9/2014

Chunichi Dragons

  • Takuya Asao (right elbow) could pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game some time later this month (perhaps during a six game stretch that begins on May 27).  That could put him at Ichi-gun in June.  He tossed indoor batting practice at Nagoya Stadium on Thursday.  He threw forty-five pitches, all fastballs.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (right elbow) was scratched from his Ni-gun outing against Softbank on the 9th because of lower back pain.  He ended a throwing session on the 7th early with pain in his lower back and was examined at a hospital on the 8th.  While the injury does not appear to be serious, his Ichi-gun ETA could be pushed back from May to June.   • Atsunori Inaba (left knee) began his rehab at the Ni-gun facilities at Kamagaya on Friday.  He swung a bat for the fist time since April 13.  Inaba had been working out Sapporo after he had his knee cleaned out in April. Source: Sports Hochi 5/9/2014

Former chief trainer Hirohisa Hagiwara died of lung cancer at 8:56am on Saturday.  He was sixty-eight.  Hagiwara was a part of the organization between 1978 and 2005.

Yomiuri Giants return from their stint in the ABL

The Melbourne Aces of the Australian Baseball League said goodbye to a group of 6 Yomiuri Giants on the 23rd. The Melbourne Aces also declared the 23rd Japanese Night and held a number of events like a sushi-eating competition and a Sumo-suit race.

Yoshiyuki Kamei returned to Japan on Friday.  Kamei not only had a chance to spend some time at third, but also at second (first time ever) as well.
