The Yokohama Bay Stars announced today that they signed former Yomiuri Giant Jose Lopez (31). According to a report by Nikkan Sports, the two sides agreed to a two-year deal that will be worth an estimated 150 million yen plus incentives in 2015.

The Yomiuri Giants at home Hero Award for March/April went to Jose Lopez (determined by fan balloting).

March 30, vs Hanshin: with the bases loaded and two out in the 7th, Lopez blasted a grand slam to left.  He picked up another RBI on in the 6th on a single to right.  The Giants won the game 12-3.  [official announcement - box score]

The Yomiuri Giants announced today that they signed Scott Mathieson and Jose Lopez to contract extensions.  Mathieson got a two-year deal worth an estimated 300 million yen while Lopez agreed to a one-year deal worth an estimated 170 million yen.

Dennis Houlton, Manny Acosta, and John Bowker became free agents today.

The Giants would like Scott Mathieson (29) and Jose Lopez (29) to return next season.  They are undecided on Dennis Houlton (34) and John Bowker (30).  Manny Acosta (32) will likely not return.

The Giants are planning to reassign Ichi-gun batting coach Akira Eto to Ni-gun batting coach.  Ni-gun batting coach Takayuki Shimizu will be called up to replace Eto at Ichi-gun.  Koji Goto will likely join the team as an Ikusei coach.  Current Ikusei coach Kosuke Yoshihara will probably be brought up to either Ichi-gun or Ni-gun.

Kan Otake met with the front office on Monday for the third time and once again held off on making a decision.

"There is not a very large gap between what I am looking for and what the organization offered.  We had a good discussion.  I want to think about this by looking at the big picture," Otake said.

Yasutomo Kubo (33) is most likely thinking about exercising his FA option.  According to people involved, Kubo's agent has met with the Tigers a number of times, but has yet to agree to stay.  It is possible he will wait until the very last minute to make his decision.

The Tigers are said to be interested in potential free agents Hideaki Wakui (Seibu) and Shinya Tsuruoka (Nippon Ham).

Jose Lopez told reporters on Monday he no longer felt discomfort in his left side and that he was at about ninety percent.

Softbank Hawks

Kenji Otonari (had surgery to treat the ossification of the yellow ligament) tossed sixty-one pitches to Ikusei players Daiki Nakahara and Ryosuke Shibata during batting practice at the Saitozaki facilities today.  He also tossed batting practice on the 5th.

Otonari is hoping to pitch in the Phoenix League.

Manabu Mima was pulled partway through tonight's game against the Seibu Lions with discomfort in his right elbow -- he left after throwing two pitches to Takumi Kuriyama, with runners on first and third and one out in the 3rd.

Kentaro Nishimura is the fifth player in NPB history to save forty or more games in a season.  The other four: Hitoki Iwase (2005-2007, 2009-2010), Kyuji Fujikawa (2007, 2011), Kazuhiro Sasaki (1998), Marc Kroon (2008).
