Sponichi notes that Kazuhisa Makita's slide step, on average, takes about 1.1 seconds, from when he begins his delivery until the moment the ball hits the catcher's glove.  During his bullpen session on Friday, his quickest time was 1.03 second.

  • Kazuhisa Makita allowed six could-be hits during his batting practice outing. (Sponichi)

The Lions had the day off today.

Hisanobu Watanabe told reporters on Tuesday that he would like to see the team shoot for 150 stolen bases this year (up from the eighty-eight they stole last year).  He also said that he wanted Shogo Akiyama to steal at least twenty bases (up from the eight he stole last year).

  • Kazuhisa Makita faced Takuya Hara and Shogo Akiyama during batting practice and threw fifty-nine pitches. (Nikkan Sports)

Today was the last day of the third block of spring camp.  The team has the day off tomorrow.

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Saturday

  • 1st round draft pick Ken Togame faced ten batters during situational batting practice and did not allow any hits.  He topped out at 147km/h and struck out six.  2nd round draft pick Hirotaka Koishi faced twelve batters and allowed two hits and walked two. (Daily Sports)
  • Kazuhisa Makita threw fifty-five pitches, all fastballs, during his bullpen session.  Tatsuyuki Uemoto caught the session.  This was his first bullpen since the start of spring camp. (Daily Sports)

1st round draft pick Ken Togame is thinking about using the Dragonball Z theme song for his intro music.

The Ichi-gun Lions had the day off today.

Kazuhisa Makita worked out for about an hour on his day off today.  His workouts included running, playing catch, and long distance throwing.  Makita is planning to toss his first bullpen during spring camp during the next block, which begins tomorrow.

1st round draft pick Ken Togame and 2nd round draft pick Hirotaka Koishi did some running on their day off today -- they ran the distance between the hotel and the stadium (about six kilometers).

Hisanobu Watanabe named Mitsugu Ishikawa the MVP for the first half of spring camp.

Batting Practice Bullpen Sessions
 

Sunday

  • Hideaki Wakui threw forty pitches to a standing catcher.  This was his first bullpen session during spring camp. (Daily Sports)

Kazuhisa Makita rejoined the rest of the players for general practices today (returning from the flu).  His workouts included playing catch, running, and fielding practice.

===

Hideaki Wakui told reporters he tossed his bullpen session today at about 60%.  He also said he felt pressured into the session by the coaches because he was the last pitcher that had yet to toss one.

===

2nd round draft pick Hirotaka Koishi told reporters on Saturday that he will not write haikus until he records his first victory and gets a hero interview.

===

NPB Commissioner Ryozo Kato visited the Seibu Lions today.

The team had the day off today.

===

Kazuhisa Makita took a 3.6km walk around the player hotel earlier today.  Makita was diagnosed with the flu on Friday and was given permission to go outdoors after his fever dropped.  He should be able to start working out again tomorrow.

1st round draft pick Ken Togame and 2nd round draft pick Hirotaka Koishi went sightseeing on their day off today.  Their day included a tuna cut and clean demonstration and picking dekopons (citrus fruit) and kumquats.

===

Fumikazu Kimura faced two batters during batting practice on Friday and allowed three could-be hits on 46 pitches.

===

Tatsuya Oishi and Yusei Kikuchi will be starters for an intra-squad game on February 12.

The first day of camp began at 9am with an welcoming ceremony at Nango Stadium.

Fumiya Nishiguchi had to borrow Hideaki Wakui's uniform after forgetting that he was scheduled to toss a bullpen session.

===

Kazuhisa Makita has the flu and missed the first day of spring camp.  Makita was not feeling well on Tuesday and was examined at a hospital.  He was diagnosed with the influenza A virus.

Makita has been isolated away from the rest of the players and will most likely miss a few days of practice.

===

Hisanobu Watanabe is excited about both Yusei Kikuchi and Tatsuya Oishi, which could be especially significant for the two young pitchers since no one has a guaranteed spot in the starting rotation right now.

===

Bullpen sessions:

Wednesday

Oishi threw 113 pitches while receiving advice from pitching coach Tadashi Sugimoto.
