[7/24/2014] Injury Report: Kazuki Yoshimi (Chunichi), Hideki Okajima (Softbank)

Chunichi Dragons

  • Ryosuke Hirata (left ankle) took batting practice at Nagoya Stadium on Thursday.  He faced three different pitchers and recorded four could-be hits. He could play in his first rehab game some time before the end of the month. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/24/2014
  • Kazuki Yoshimi was taken off the active roster on Thursday with some inflammation in his right elbow.  Yoshimi started feeling tightness in the elbow during his last start on the 23rd.  He was examined at a hospital on Thursday and diagnosed with inflammation.  There were no other abnormalities.  For now, the Dragons plan to skip him once in the starting rotation. Yakult Swallows

  • Wladimir Balentien missed Tuesday's game with pain in his left wrist.  He was examined at a hospital on Wednesday morning.  No abnormalities were found.  He still had some pain in the wrist, but was able to play on Wednesday and hit his first home run since May 31.   • Ryoma Matsuda (right elbow) played in his first Ni-gun intra-squad rehab game on Wednesday.  He pitched one inning and retired the side in order.  He threw nine pitches, struck out one, and topped out at 146km/h. Source: Sports Hochi 7/23/2014, Nikkan Sports 7/23/2014

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Atsunori Inaba (left knee) cut his workouts at Kamagaya short on Friday (June 27) because of problems with his lower body.  No official word on what the problem was, but he was apparently examined at a hospital.  Inaba mentioned after a Ni-gun rehab game against Yokohama on Tuesday (June 24) that his first step out of the batter's box did not feel right when he hit a single to center in the 3rd inning.  He went 0-for-3 the following day and was able to participate in practices on Thursday (June 26).   • Tetsuya Utsumi (left shoulder) tossed a bullpen session on Thursday, his third since he was taken off the active roster.  He threw fastballs and all his breaking pitches.  Assuming no setbacks, he will most likely pitch in two batting practice scrimmages before pitching in a Ni-gun rehab game against Yakult on the 29th.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (right elbow) left his last Ni-gun rehab start on the 18th with a cramp in the back of his right knee (he pitched three innings and gave up three runs).  He was examined at a hospital in Nagoya on Thursday.  No abnormalities were found.  "I got a cramp in my leg and the outing didn't go as planned, but I felt good throwing the ball.  I just have to get used to facing hitters," said Yoshimi.  He will probably pitch in one or two more Ni-gun games and could be added to active roster some time in early July.   • Yasuhiro Ogawa (right hand) tossed batting practices at the Ni-gun facilities in Toda, Saitama on Friday.  He faced Ryota Yachi and Jun Matsui.  He threw fifty-one pitches and allowed eight could-be hits.  This was his first session as a batting practice pitcher since his injury.   • Ryuji Ichioka (right shoulder) started a throwing program on Tuesday.  He played catch at a distance of about twenty meters on Wednesday.  He told reporters he threw the ball at about sixty percent. Source: Tokyo Sports 6/19/2014

  • Kazuki Yoshimi pitched in a Ni-gun game against Softbank on Wednesday.  He was scheduled to go five innings, but left after three because of discomfort in the back of his right thigh.  He was examined at a hospital in Nagoya on Thursday.  Yoshimi visited Nagoya Stadium to provide team official with an update on his status.  He told reporters it was just a cramp.   • Shohei Otani developed a cramp in his right calf during his second straight start on Wednesday.  Otani told reporters on Thursday his leg was fine.  The Fighters will continue to make pitching his top priority this season and will adjust his playing time as a position player accordingly.   • Tsuyoshi Nishioka took seventy-nine swings during batting practice at Naruohama on Wednesday (forty-one from the right side and thirty-eight from left) and hit four over the fence.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (right elbow, lower back) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Hanshin on Wednesday.  He pitched two shutout innings in relief and gave up two hits.  His next Ni-gun outing will come on five days of rest against Softbank.  Wednesday's game was Yoshimi's first game in forty-one days.  With no other setbacks, he could join the active roster in early July.   • Leslie Anderson (right thigh) is expected to be ready to play in some rehab games at Ni-gun beginning on June 7.  He told reporters on Friday he was at about eighty percent.  He has already resumed batting practice, but has not done any running or hitting with cleats. Source: Sanspo 5/31/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Shinobu Fukuhara (right adductor) could join the team as early as June 2.  Tomoyuki Kubota (right elbow) is scheduled to pitch in another Ni-gun game next week. Source: Sanspo 5/31/2014
  • Kazunari Tsuruoka (right side) played some catch at a distance of about fifty meters at Naruohama on Friday for the first time since he was taken off the active roster on the 27th.  He told reporters on Thursday he had more problems swinging the bat than throwing the ball.   • Junki Ito (right elbow) started a Ni-gun rehab game against Softbank at Nagoya Stadium on Saturday.  With two outs in the 7th inning, catcher Iori Katsura tried to throw out a base-stealer at second.  The throw was low and hit Ito in the head.  He was bleeding and in pain.  He was removed from the game and taken to the hospital.  Brain tests did not reveal any problems.  He required stitches to close a cut on his right ear.   • Kenshin Kawakami (lower back) started a Ni-gun game against Softbank on Friday.  He gave up three runs on six hits over three innings of work.  He faced fourteen hitters, struck out one, hit one, and topped out at 142km/h.  It was his first game in about a month. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/31/2014
  • Masahiro Araki was hit by a pitch in a game against Orix at Nagoya Dome on the 29th and diagnosed with a fracture in his right index finger.  It could take a month and a half to two months for a full recovery.  However, Araki is hoping to make it back when the regular season resumes on June 27.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (lower back) could pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game against Hanshin on June 11.  He resumed pitching practices on the 29th.  He would like to pitch in at least three Ni-gun rehab games.  That could put his first Ichi-gun start on July 4 against Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome.   • Hiroki Uemoto played some catch, fielded some grounders, and took some soft-toss batting practice at Naruohama on Tuesday for the first time since he suffered a fracture in his right thumb during a game against the Yakult Swallows on the 3rd.   • Tsuyoshi Nishioka asked the Tigers for a month.  He spent that time working out at facilities near his house and at Koshien.  He purposely kept his rehab quiet because he felt his teammates had nothing positive to gain by watching him.   • Katsuhiro Nagakawa took a ball hit by Yamato off his left calf in the 9th inning of Wednesday's game against the Hanshin Tigers.  He was replaced after facing the next batter.  He later told reporters he still felt pain and was not sure about his status moving forward. Chunichi Dragons

  • Kazuki Yoshimi's comeback hit a bump in the road when he started experiencing lower back pains on the 7th.  The Dragons are still not sure when he will be ready to resume throwing off a mound -- he can play some catch, but only at a distance of about twenty meters.  His return to the active roster might get pushed back to some time in late-June, at the earliest.   • Manabu Mima started a Ni-gun game against Yomiuri on Tuesday.  He gave up three runs on six hits over six innings of work.  Twelve of the eighteen outs he recorded came on the ground.  He threw eighty pitches, faced twenty-four hitters, hit two, and struck out four.  His next start will likely come on the 20th against Ni-gun Lotte.  This was his first Ni-gun rehab game since he took a batted ball off the right side of the lower abdomen during a Lotte game on April 29.  Source: Sports Hochi 5/14/2014
