[7/20/2014] Yakult Swallows, Softbank Hawks agree to a two-for-two trade

The Yakult Swallows and Softbank Hawks announced today that they agreed to a two-for-two trade.  The Swallows will send pitcher Ryo Hidaka (24) and infielder Keizo Kawashima (30) to the Hawks for pitchers Nagisa Arakaki (34) and Hirofumi Yamanaka (28).

[3/10/2014] Yakult Swallows: Keizo Kawashima to miss two months with left thumb fracture

The Swallows announced that Keizo Kawashima was examined at a hospital in Tokyo and diagnosed with a distal phalanx fracture in his left thumb.  He will require about two months for a full recovery.

Kawashima suffered the injury while sliding into a base during a practice game against Surugadai University on the 8th.  Junji Ogawa told reporters they were planning to call him in time for a game against either Orix on the 13th or Rakuten on the 15th.

Hanshin Tigers

  • Mauro Gomez (right knee) took live outdoor batting practice at Naruohama on Sunday.  He swung the bat thirty-eight times and hit five over the fence.  Assistant Batting Coach Thomas O'Malley was the batting practice pitcher.  Gomez will play in a batting practice scrimmage on Monday.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/9/2014 ... The Tigers are planning to have Gomez play in some Ni-gun games before calling him up to Ichi-gun.  Source: Sanspo 3/9/2014

Yakult Swallows

  • Keizo Kawashima played in a Ni-gun practice game against Surugadai University on Saturday and hurt his left thumb while sliding into third base in the 6th inning.  He will be examined since he may have suffered a fracture.  Kawashima started spring at Ni-gun camp because of discomfort in his right shoulder and elbow.  He was feeling better and was expected to join the Ichi-gun team within the next few days.  Source: Sanspo 3/9/2014
  • Akihisa Nishida was taken out of Saturday's game against Hiroshima after he took a foul ball off his groin area while playing defense in the 2nd inning.  He was taken to the hospital.  No problems were found.  Source: Sanpso 3/9/2014

  • Takumi Kuriyama (left thigh) is expected to rejoin the Ichi-gun team during a three-game series against Nippon Ham that begins on the 11th at Sapporo Dome.  Source: Daily Sports 3/9/2014

Injury Update 4/15/2011: Keizo Kawashima (YAK) and Hiroki Kokubo (SOF)

The Swallows announced today that Keizo Kawashima will be undergoing surgery on his right hand in a hospital in Tokyo on the 19th.

Hiroki Kokubo told reporters today that it could take 3-4 weeks for his avulsion fracture to fully heal.  He spent today working on his lower body.

Keizo Kawashima could require surgery for a right pinky metacarpal fracture (右手第5中手骨の骨折).  Depending on the severity, he could end up missing the entire first half.  A final decision will be made when he gets the hand checked out again today.

Hiroki Kokubo could be out about month with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb (右手第1末節骨剥離骨折).  And it seems he's currently going to try and see if he can return in time for the start of the Inter-league season (5/17).

Yakult Swallows: Keizo Kawashima has a fractured pinky

Keizo Kawashima went to a hospital in Kitakyushu today and was diagnosed with a fracture in the metacarpal of his right pinky finger.  Kawashima is now scheduled to get the finger reexamined at a hospital in Tokyo tomorrow.

Kawashima was hit by a pitch on his right hand during yesterday's opening day game against the Yomiuri Giants.

Yakult: Keizo Kawashima rejoins Ichi-gun roster for fall practice

Keizo Kawashima started working out at Jingu on Monday after taking 7 days off for rest.  And for the first time since undergoing surgery on his right elbow on March 4th, Kawashima is expected to rejoin the Ichi-gun roster for the start of fall practice on the 20th.

"I'm excited about practicing with everyone again," said Kawashima.  "I don't know if I'll be able to do everything, but I should be able to do most of the basic exercises."  He then added, "First, it's about getting back to being able to play short.  After that, I'll work on wherever they want me to play."
