Ken Takahashi set to retire at the end of the season

It appears Ken Takahashi (HIR) has decided to retire at the end of the season because he hasn't been able to get back into proper pitching frameset (both mentally and physically).  It also seems the Carp were no longer considering him as a piece of their puzzle for the 2011 season.

A Q&A posted by Sanspo:

Your feelings right now?

I'm really happy.  I feel like a rookie 2 years in a row.  I started from 1 a year ago and it'll sort of be like starting from 1 next year.  Kind of like an "old rookie."

What led you to give up on the Majors?

I may have gotten an offer had I waited a bit more, but negotiations took a long time last year.  I just wanted to get things doing within the year.

What did you gain by playing in the Majors?

The hunger [to play].  I made it up from the tough minors.  I had to be really clever on all fronts in order to be used.

At 40 [you'll] be the oldest [on the roster]...

It'll be nice if I can provide people courage by pitching.  I'd also like to get the younger players to want to show me up.

Any stat-specific goals?

If I'm starting, double digit wins.  If it's in relief, anything to help the team win.  I just want to contribute to the team's success.

You'll be playing in a new stadium...

It's a great ballpark and lots of fans are coming out to watch.  I want to hurry up and get on that mound.

Ken Takahashi giving up on Majors, to sign with team in NPB

Ken Takahashi was released by the New York Mets back on October 20th.  Earlier today, he announced that he was giving up on the Majors to focus on restarting his career in Japan.

A number of NPB teams are reportedly interested in Takahashi, including the Hiroshima Carp.

Takahashi could make an announcement sometime early next week about which team he'll be playing for next year.

Ken Takahashi would also consider the NPB

Ken Takahashi still has his sights set on returning  to the Majors but also wouldn't mind a return to the NPB.  Retirement also appears to be an option.

"Returning to the US is about 50%, staying in Japan 30%, and retirement 20%," said Takahashi.

If Takahashi can get an MLB contract, he will most definitely make a return to the Majors.  But if the only offers he gets are minor league deals, Takahashi may opt to play in the NPB or retire.
