Kentaro Kyuko spent about an hour and a half throwing a baseball into net during his day-off on Tuesday.

Kyuko was supposed to pitch in an intra-squad game on the 11th, but could not because the game was called early.  He is now scheduled to pitch in a practice game against KIA (KBO) on the 16th.

The media learned on Friday that Ryohei Kawamoto (right chest) and Kenichi Matsuoka (right hamstring) could end up missing a good chunk of time.  The chief trainer told reporters that both players suffered injuries that require more than just a few days and hinted that it could be a while before they return.

The two join Ryoji Aikawa (right big toe), Yoshinori Sato (working through issues), Chang-Yong Lim (working through issues), Yuki Shichijo (coming back from left knee surgery in the winter), and Kentaro Kyuko (coming back from left hand surgery) in a growing list of players that have no set timetable for their returns.

3rd round draft pick Wataru Hiyane is thinking about inviting Tohoku Earthquake victims from Ishinomaki, Miyagi to the two inter-league games the Swallows play against the Rakuten Eagles at Kleenex Stadium (June 13 and 14).

Kenichi Matsuoka told reporters on Friday that he donated a total twenty-three randoserus/backpacks (worth about 920,000 yen) to twelve different childcare facilities in Kumamoto.  That's one randoseru for every hold he recorded in 2011.

Junji Ogawa, the coaching staff, and the players attended a welcoming ceremony at the Urasoe City Offices before practices this morning.  About 200 fans showed up for the event.

Yoshinori Sato cut his left pinky toe before arriving in Okinawa.  The cut led to an infection that caused foot swelling and a fever.  Because of this, Yoshinori worked out separately from the rest of the group today -- his workouts including playing catch and some light running.

"It is not serious.  We will see how he is does today and tomorrow before deciding what to do next," said chief trainer Kobayashi.

Ryoji Aikawa is the first official team captain since Shinya Miyamoto in 2008.

Kenichi Matsuoka was named captain of the pitching staff on Tuesday.

Bullpen sessions:

Shohei Tateyama threw 102 pitches (including change-ups) to a squatting catcher at about 40%.

Yakult Swallows to make renovations at Toda Field

The Swallows have decided to make renovations to Toda Field (Ni-gun facility).  Team president Tsuyoshi Kinugasa and Yakult honsha president Takashige Negishi visited the field today to check on current conditions.  Construction will begin in February.

Sections that will be addressed: outfield fence, bullpens, visiting team locker room, portions of the artificial and en-tou-cas surfaces, seating section behind home plate, and building a women's bathroom.  A netting in left will also be installed in November.

Hitoshi Yamamoto is thinking about trying waterfall meditation at a temple near Tokyo sometime early next week.  Yamamoto is currently in Guam and is scheduled to return on Saturday (1/21).

Kenichi Matsuoka threw about 50 pitches in the bullpen on Thursday (standing catcher).  He later told reporters he wanted to brush up on his fastball and fork and completely learn how to throw a shuto during spring camp.

Once he manages to secure playing time on a regular basis, 3rd round draft pick Wataru Hiyane would like to donate money for every base he steals to help northern Japan.
