"I have not thought [about the option]. I've been demoted twice this year. Right now, the only thing I'm thinking about is helping the team," said Nishimura.

Batting Practice Bullpen Sessions

  • Both Shuichi Murata and Shinnosuke Abe stayed back for extra BP after general practices. (Nikkan Sports)

  • Kentaro Nishimura threw forty-seven pitches, including the curve he is working on. (Nikkan Sports)
  • Shun Tono threw fifty pitches.  He also worked on throwing his cutter to the inside corner with someone standing in the left-handed batter's box. (Nikkan Sports)
  • Dicky Gonzalez threw 118 pitches. (Daily Sports)

  • Toshiya Sugiuchi threw 101 pitches, including two difference kinds of sliders.  It was his fourth session since the start of spring camp.  Shinnosuke Abe was the catcher. (Sanspo)

The Ni-gun Giants had the day off today.

For the fourth time during spring camp, the Giants decided to start practices indoors today because of the cold weather.

Tetsuya Yamaguchi faced Hisayoshi Chono and Hayato Sakamoto during batting practice today and threw forty-seven pitches.

Taishi Ota stayed back after general workouts for about an hour of extra fielding practice in the outfield today.

Kentaro Nishimura is scheduled to start an intra-squad practice game on February 12.

Sanspo reports that the first six spots in the line-up could go: Hayato Sakamoto, Daisuke Fujimura, Hisayoshi Chono, Shinnosuke Abe, Shuichi Murata, Michihiro Ogasawara.

Nikkan Sports mentions that Tatsunori Hara could try something a one thru five of: Chono, Sakamoto, John Bowker, Abe, Murata.  It is also possible that Ryosuke Miyaguni gets a shot at being the sixth starter in the rotation.

Regardless, it seems Hara will reserve the four and five spots for Abe and Murata.

====== UPDATE 2/9 @ 1:54am

Fujimura will be using lighter cleats this year, from 330 grams to about 300 grams.

Shun Tono is working on a new delivery where he does not raise his arms above his head when he lifts his left leg.

Sponichi reports that Hara wants his base line-up to be Sakamoto batting first, Chono batting third, Murata batting fourth, and Abe batting fifth.  From there, players can be moved around.  For example: if someone different were to bat third, then Chono could move to batting lead-off with Sakamoto dropping down to the seven hole.

Regarding the outfield spots, Sponichi mentions, in a separate article, that Chono will be treated as the everyday right fielder.  Bowker and Yoshinobu Takahashi will battle it out for left, and Tetsuya Matsumoto and Ota will compete for the CF job.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

===== 2/10 @ 10:55pm

The veteran players (S group) joined the rest of the Ichi-gun players today.  They also took BP outdoors for the first time since the start of spring camp (excluding Shinnosuke Abe).  Yoshinobu Takahashi and Yoshitomo Tani both told reporters that they had a hard time hitting the ball during BP (timing issues).  Tani and Michihiro Ogasawara both faced Tetsuya Utsumi and Shun Tono.

Utsumi threw 64 pitches during BP yesterday and gave up 5 could-be hits.  While he didn't throw his new fork, he did throw his fastball, slider, and change.

Tono threw 62 pitches (all fastballs) during BP.

Carlos Torres faced Hidetoshi Tsuburaya and Daijiro Tanaka during BP today (his 2nd BP outing) and threw 49 pitches while giving up 4 could-be hits.  Torres struggled with his control and threw 6 straight balls at one point.

Itaru Hashimoto, Tomoya Inzen, and Daisuke Fujimura took part in Ichi-gun practice today.  During situational fielding, Hashimoto showed off his arm and inspired Tatsunori Hara to tell reporters that Hashimoto had the best arm in the Giants' system.

Alex Ramirez visited Miyazaki Gakuen High School today and dropped in a on a number clubs (flower arrangement, Japanese calligraphy, koto music) for ideas on his HR dance.

===== 2/10 @ 4:57pm

Kentaro Nishimura told reporters today that the biggest thing he had to work on moving forward was his balance while throwing the ball.

Said Nishimura, "I really need to think about my balance.  I mess up my balance if I try to throw too hard, so I want to keep it at about 80%.  I want to be able to throw a fastball with some good spin on it."

Taishi Ota worked out for about an hour on his day off yesterday.  The Giants will play three intra-squad games between 2/13 and 2/17.  Ota told reporters he'd wanted to hit at least one home run during those three games and that he also wanted to do well against Hirokazu Sawamura (1st round) on the 15th so that he could get his name in the papers (Ota collected 3 could-be hits on 33 pitches the first time they faced each other during BP on 2/6).

Ota is competing against Rutsy Ryal and Yoshiyuki Kamei for the starting third base job.
