  • Jose Lopez and Scott Mathieson left Japan on the 19th. Lopez is a question mark for next season. He is interested in returning. Mathieson will be in the second year of a two-year deal in 2015. Source: Sponichi 10/19/2014

The Yomiuri Giants at home Hero Award for May went to Leslie Anderson (determined by fan balloting).

May 7, vs Yokohama: with the bases loaded and two out in the 6th, Anderson deposited his second grand slam of the season into the left-center field seats.  He finished the game with his sixth modasho of the year.  And with the bases loaded this year, he is 4-for-5 with twelve RBI.  The Giants won the game 10-2.  [official announcement - box score]

  • Leslie Anderson (right thigh) is expected to be ready to play in some rehab games at Ni-gun beginning on June 7.  He told reporters on Friday he was at about eighty percent.  He has already resumed batting practice, but has not done any running or hitting with cleats. Source: Sanspo 5/31/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Shinobu Fukuhara (right adductor) could join the team as early as June 2.  Tomoyuki Kubota (right elbow) is scheduled to pitch in another Ni-gun game next week. Source: Sanspo 5/31/2014
  • Kazunari Tsuruoka (right side) played some catch at a distance of about fifty meters at Naruohama on Friday for the first time since he was taken off the active roster on the 27th.  He told reporters on Thursday he had more problems swinging the bat than throwing the ball. Chunichi Dragons

  • Junki Ito (right elbow) started a Ni-gun rehab game against Softbank at Nagoya Stadium on Saturday.  With two outs in the 7th inning, catcher Iori Katsura tried to throw out a base-stealer at second.  The throw was low and hit Ito in the head.  He was bleeding and in pain.  He was removed from the game and taken to the hospital.  Brain tests did not reveal any problems.  He required stitches to close a cut on his right ear.   • Kenshin Kawakami (lower back) started a Ni-gun game against Softbank on Friday.  He gave up three runs on six hits over three innings of work.  He faced fourteen hitters, struck out one, hit one, and topped out at 142km/h.  It was his first game in about a month. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/31/2014
  • Masahiro Araki was hit by a pitch in a game against Orix at Nagoya Dome on the 29th and diagnosed with a fracture in his right index finger.  It could take a month and a half to two months for a full recovery.  However, Araki is hoping to make it back when the regular season resumes on June 27.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (lower back) could pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game against Hanshin on June 11.  He resumed pitching practices on the 29th.  He would like to pitch in at least three Ni-gun rehab games.  That could put his first Ichi-gun start on July 4 against Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome.   • Hirokazu Sawamura (right shoulder) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Nippon Ham at Kamagaya on Thursday.  He entered the game in the 6th and retired the side in order (Fo7, Ks, F7).  He threw ten pitches and topped out at 151km/h.  It was his first game since November 3, 2013.   • Tomoyuki Kubota (right elbow) pitched in a Ni-gun intra-squad game on Thursday.  He tossed two shutout innings (an inning more than scheduled).  He did not allow any hits, struck out two, topped out at 145km/h, and threw thirty-four pitches.  It was his first game of the year.   • Orlando Roman was not been able to pitch in the team's last two games because of tightness in his right elbow.  He participated in practice at Jingu on Thursday.  Roman told reporters he was in good condition and felt no tightness.   • Hirokazu Sawamura (right shoulder) could pitch an inning of rehab during a two-game Ni-gun series against Nippon Ham that begins on the 20th.  He worked a batting practice scrimmage on Thursday.  He faced Yoshiyuki Kamei, Suguru Ino, and Ryuichi Kajimae.  They went 2-for-11 with two walks against him.  He threw forty-five pitches and topped out at 141km/h.   • Tsuyoshi Nishioka asked the Tigers for a month.  He spent that time working out at facilities near his house and at Koshien.  He purposely kept his rehab quiet because he felt his teammates had nothing positive to gain by watching him.   • Kazuki Yoshimi's comeback hit a bump in the road when he started experiencing lower back pains on the 7th.  The Dragons are still not sure when he will be ready to resume throwing off a mound -- he can play some catch, but only at a distance of about twenty meters.  His return to the active roster might get pushed back to some time in late-June, at the earliest.
