[10/1/2013] Yokohama Bay Stars: Masaaki Koike to retire at the end of the season

The Bay Stars announced that that thirty-three-year-old outfielder Masaaki Koike will retire at the end of the season.  Koike was limited to just twelve Ichi-gun game this season because there was no room for him on the active roster with players like Nyjer Morgan, Hitoshi Tamura, Tatsuhiko Kinjo, Sho Aranami, and Shotaro Ide getting the bulk of the playing time.  Koike approached the organization with his decision and they accepted.

A press conference will be held at a later date.

Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Alex Ramirez took around fifty swings during pre-game batting practice and hit six over the fence. (Nikkan Sports)

Masaaki Koike batted clean-up today because Norihiro Nakamura felt discomfort in his left knee.  Nakamura is expected to play on Sunday.

Kiyoshi Nakahata told reporters today that Yuki Kuniyoshi will start the home opener on April 3 (vs Chunichi).

Alex Ramirez did some jogging, played some catch, and took some batting practice on Friday.  And while he did not warm-up or taking fielding practice with the Ichi-gun team today, he did participate in pre-game batting practice.

Yuki Kuniyoshi has not allowed a run over eighteen consecutive exhibition game innings (span of four games).

Takayuki Kajitani has ten stolen bases in eleven attempts through sixteen exhibition games.

The Bay Stars announced today that they will pray for a successful season at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu on March 27.  Fans will be welcome to join them between 10:30am and 11:00am.

Yokohama Bay Stars: manager, coaches, officials check out spring training facilities

Kiyoshi Nakahata, head coach Yutaka Takagi, pitching coach Yu Tomori, owner Makoto Haruta, and team president Jun Ikeda visited the spring training facilities (Ginowan and Kadena) in Okinawa today.

Yoshitomo Tsutsugo worked out with Shuich Murata (YOM) in Amamioshima today and told reporters he wanted to hit 20 homers and earn a spot in the heart of the batting order.  Tsutsugo is currently working on tweaking his batting stance by keeping his hands further back before swinging.

Masaaki Koike worked out at Bay Stars Stadium on Saturday for the first time since being traded back to the team.

Nakahata would like to invite INAC Kobe mid-fielder Homare Sawa to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at Yokohama Stadium this season.

Sawa threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a Chunichi-Hanshin game at Koshien Stadium last year on 10/2.

Masaaki Koike gets a two-year deal from the Yokohama Bay Stars

The Yokohama Bay Stars held a press conference to introduce Masaaki Koike to the media today.  Koike signed a two-year deal worth a total 80M yen and was assigned the number 8.

Yokohama Bay Stars re-sign Takayuki Shinohara to a two-year deal

The Yokohama Bay Stars re-signed 35-year-old Takayuki Shinohara to a two-year deal worth a total 80M yen (includes incentives and bonuses) on Thursday.  Shinohara's contract will remain at 12M yen next season.

In other FA news:

The Bay Stars met with Masaaki Koike for the first time on Thursday and reportedly offered the 31-year-old OF a multi-year deal.

Said GM Shigeru Takada, "Koike is a right-handed, can play the oufield, and can hit.  He fills a need."

Yokohama Bay Stars to offer Alex Ramirez a multi-year deal

According to Sponichi, the Yokohama Bay Stars are moving foward with plans to offer  Alex Ramirez (37) a multi-year deal.  A team rep told reporters that if things go well, a deal could be agreed upon some time this week.

Sanspo also notes that the Bay Stars could also be close to a deal* with Masaaki Koike (31) and that they were expected to announce the additions of Masanori Hayashi (28) and Kazumasa Kikuchi (29) some time today.

Chunichi Sports mentioned back on 11/29 the team may have been planning to offer him a two-year deal worth around 80M yen a year.

DeNA interested in Sugiuchi; set to meet Murata on 12/2

According to Nikkan Sports, DeNA is interested in Toshiya Sugiuchi, Masaaki Koike, and Kazunari Tsuruoka and are rumored to be the current favorites to land Alex Ramirez.  They also have not forgotten about Shuichi Murata -- they will be meeting with him on Friday (12/2) morning.

Masaaki Koike (CHU) to exercise FA option, could return to Yokohama

Sanspo is reporting that Masaaki Koike (31) will exercise his FA option.

Said Koike, "I am grateful for what Chunichi has done for me over the years, for the experience they gave me.  But in thinking about my baseball career, I want more playing.  I decided to exercise my FA option because I want to hear what other teams have to say."

The Yokohama Bay Stars are thought to be interested in Koike.

UPDATE @ 5:35pm - Koike filed the necessary paperwork with the team earlier today.

Chunichi Dragons: Masaaki Koike could exercise FA option, wants to talk to team first

Sports Hochi reports that Masaaki Koike is thinking about exercising the domestic FA option he earned this season and said to reporters, "I would like more playing time.  I want to talk to the club and find out if they fell they need me."

Kohei Oda also earned a domestic FA option this season but didn't say much to reporters other than he wants more time to think.
