The front office has not been able to narrow down clean-up hitting candidates because none fulfill all of the team's requirements.  They are going to hold off on signing a new bat until they can find someone.  They were initially limiting their searches mostly to triple-A players but may expand their search to players on MLB rosters that are looking for a new place to play.

Sponichi notes that the Tigers may be looking at players from/near Central America, like Mauro Gomez.

Chunichi Dragons plan to sign Wei-Ying Chen sometime before spring camp

by on Jan.17, 2011 @ 1:50 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Chief of player development, Takashi Ide, told reporters yesterday that the team will try to sign Wei-Ying Chen to a contract before the start of spring camp.  The two sides have already agreed to basic terms, but still need to work out a few other minor details (as has been mentioned before, the Dragons have agreed to make him a free agent after the 2011 season).  Since the Dragons want to finalize the contract with Chen directly, they will wait until he returns to Japan.

Ide also told reporters that Chen was currently in the US (most likely for training).

In other team related news:

Masahiko Morino would like to become just the fourth player in club history to play in all of the team's regular season games 3 years straight.  The other three players: Shinichi Eto (6 consecutive years between 1956 and 1964), Hiromitsu Ochiai (3 consecutive years between 1988 and 1990), and Hirokazu Ibata (4 consecutive years between 2004 and 2007).
