The Nippon Ham Fighters announced that they were parting ways with Michael Crotta (30). They released the following statement from Crotta:

The two years I spent as a member of the Fighters were invaluable. I learned a lot of things, both as a player and as a person. I am grateful to the Fighters. It's unfortunate that things had to end this way, but it is what it is. I would like to continue playing, perhaps again in Japan, and will do my best. Thank you for the last two years.

[11/7/2014] Nippon Ham Fighters to part ways with Miranda, Carter; re-sign Crotta

The Nippon Ham Fighters announced today that they are parting ways with Juan Miranda (31) and Anthony Carter (28). Both players were placed on waivers.

The Fighters also announced that they finalized a contract with Michael Crotta (30) for the 2015 season that could be worth an estimated eighty million yen.

Hanshin Tigers

  • Yamato (left side) played in a Ni-gun rehab game on Sunday against Orix.  He got the start in center and batted second.  He went 1-for-3.  The Tigers are planning to make a decision on Yamato after he plays in at least one more rehab game. Source: Sponichi 8/17/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Ryuhei Matsuyama (left knee) played in a Ni-gun rehab practice game against Tsuneishi (Industrial League) on Saturday.  He started the game in right and batted fifth.  He went 1-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.  He will most likely play in a few more rehab games in right field and at first before the Carp consider him for the active roster.   • Ryoma Matsuda (right elbow) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Orix on Sunday.  He entered the game in the 7th and tossed a shutout inning in relief.  He faced three hitters, did not allow any hits, threw nine pitches, and topped out at 148km/h. Source: Nikkan Sports 8/3/2014

  • Yamato (left side) resumed playing catch at the Ni-gun Naruohama facilities on Saturday.  He played catch with the trainer at a distance of about fifteen meters. Source: Nikkan Sports 8/2/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Kila Ka'aihue did not play in Saturday's game against the Yomiuri Giants because of bruise on his left index finger.  Ka'aihue suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch during an at bat in the 12th inning of Friday's game.  He is expected to return to the line-up on Sunday. 2013 draft class training camp ended today.

Nago City overseeded the outfield grass during the off-season to make sure it was healthy and full for spring camp.

Naoki Miyanishi started working on a sinker last spring after Hiroshi Kisanuki gave him tips on how to throw the fork.  He continued tinkering with the pitch during practices last year and managed to find some consistency during the off-season.  He plans to give it a try during spring camp and could begin using it during the regular season this year.

Michael Crotta threw thirty-five pitches, including breaking balls, to a squatting catcher in the bullpen at the indoor facilities in Sapporo on Tuesday.  He threw at about seventy percent.

Shohei Otani's workouts on Tuesday included warm-ups, playing catch with an outfielder's glove, fielding practice in right, bullpen session (sixty-two pitches), playing catch to make minor adjustments to his mechanics (about twenty throws), and batting practice (fifty-six swings, three hit over the fence).

Otani increased his weight from eighty-six to ninety kilograms during the off-season.  His chest measurements also increased, from ninety-eight to 106 centimeters.

[11/12/2013] Nippon Ham Fighters sign Michael Crotta, Luis Mendoza

The Nippon Ham Fighters announced today that they signed pitchers Michael Crotta (29) and Luis Mendoza (30).  Crotta has been assigned the number twenty, Mendoza the number fifteen.  Mendoza is a candidate for the starting rotation.  Crotta was used in a relief role this past season and also has experience as a starter.

UPDATE @ 10:38pm -

According to Sports Hochi, Mendoza signed a two-year deal worth 100 million yen a year.  Crotta signed a one-year deal worth fifty million yen.
