[7/20/2014] Yakult Swallows, Softbank Hawks agree to a two-for-two trade

The Yakult Swallows and Softbank Hawks announced today that they agreed to a two-for-two trade.  The Swallows will send pitcher Ryo Hidaka (24) and infielder Keizo Kawashima (30) to the Hawks for pitchers Nagisa Arakaki (34) and Hirofumi Yamanaka (28).

February 3

Kenji Otonari tossed another bullpen session on Monday.  It was his third session of 100 or more pitches in as many days.  He is planning to toss another bullpen on Tuesday.

Nao Higashihama has been working on a curve.  While he is unable to throw a traditional curve because of a complex fracture he suffered when he was in elementary school, he still managed to find a grip that allows him throw a ball with movement like a curve.

Nagisa Arakaki has a slightly longer right leg due to a surgical procedure he had on his right knee when he was a kid.  As a result, his left leg tended to straighten out on the landing.  He is currently trying to use the left knee a little more to improve efficiency and stability.

Koji Akiyama is spending a little more time watching players at Ni-gun camp this spring because there are more of them to watch (especially with all the new foreign players they signed this off-season) and because his presence might keep them motivated.

About twenty-four members of the organization, including Koji Akiyama and chairman Sadaharu Oh, visited the Hawks' Kannon at Yahoo Dome today and prayed for a successful season. [Ustream Video]

Seiichi Uchikawa, who was taking things slow after feeling discomfort in his left shoulder, started taking batting practice today.

Said Uchikawa to reporters, "It has improved in comparison to how things were before, but it still does not feel completely right. ... I do not plan on taking any breaks before the start of the regular season and I am preparing under the assumption that I will be playing."

Hiroki Yamada's first regular season start will likely be against the Rakuten Eagles on April 3 (Kleenex Stadium).

According to Nikkan Sports, pitching coach Ikuo Takayama said on Monday that he told six pitchers when they will be making their first starts.  Assuming Tadashi Settsu is ok to go on opening day, Nagisa Arakaki will most likely start the second game of the season (March 31, vs Orix, at Yahoo Dome).

For Arakaki, it will be his first Ichi-gun game since May 9, 2009 (vs Seibu at Yahoo Dome).

The Kyushu Sports Writers Association held a general meeting today in Fukuoka and awarded the Softbank Hawks (and the Higashi Fukuoka High School rugby team) with their top award for winning the Nippon Series last year.

The Hawks announced today that Ericsson will be a helmet sponsor this year.

Today's Kyoiku League game against Hanshin: Kazuyuki Hoashi started the game and gave up one run on five hits over five innings of work. [Nikkan Sports]

Nagisa Arakaki's next start will come against the Hiroshima Carp at Yahoo Dome on March 24.  His first regular season start will likely come on six days rest: March 31 against the Orix Buffaloes at Yahoo Dome.

Sponichi notes that the Hawks will most likely carry six relievers.  Brian FalkenborgMasahiko Morifuku, and Takehito Kanazawa will probably fill three of those spots.  Other pitchers like Hideki OkajimaShingo Tatsumi, and Yasushi Kamiuchi will be competing for the remaining three spots.

Nagisa Arakaki is scheduled to relieve Tadashi Settsu and pitch three innings in relief during Saturday's exhibition game against the Chiba Lotte Marines.

The Hawks are thinking about giving Angel Castro a look as a set-up man/closer.  Masahiko Morifuku and Takehito Kanazawa could also make it into the mix.  They may also see how pitchers like Yasushi Kamiuchi and 5th round draft pick Shinya Kayama handle pitching in spot situations.

The Hawks made a couple of minor changes inside the first base dugout at Yahoo Dome: they raised the back row of seats about fifteen centimeters to give players/coaches sitting in the back row a better view of the field; and they replaced the old bullpen  monitor with a wall-mounted flat panel screen.

Batting Practice

Tuesday

  • Yuki Yanagita faced Sho Iwasaki during BP and collected five could-be hits, including two that went over the fence, on twenty-six swings. (Sports Hochi Osaka)

The Hawks had the day off today.  And despite the day off, forty-nine players reported for practice today (coaches invited players they felt needed extra work).

Brad Penny arrived in Japan today.  The team will hold a press conference to introduce Penny on Thursday.

===

Nagisa Arakaki faced Keisuke Kaneko and Kenta Imamiya during batting practice on Tuesday and threw forty-nine pitches.

===

According to Nikkan Sports, Takahiro Mahara's right shoulder problems are similar to what he experienced when he missed the start of the 2008 season with shoulder inflammation and did not make it back to the active roster until July.

===

Sadaharu Oh has his eyes on Yuki Yanagita.

===

Takahiro Mahara's workouts on Tuesday included warm-ups, running, and various other training exercises.  He is currently not allowed to throw the baseball around.

The Hawks released player assignments for spring camp today.

The Hawks held a press conference for Wily Mo Pena at Yahoo Dome today.

Softbank announced a uniform number and registered name change today:

Nakanishi, Kenta: from 31 to 58

Chikada, Reo: from Reo (怜王) to Chikada, Reo (近田 怜王)

The Hawks visited Hakozakigu Shrine in Fukuoka today in order to pray for a success season.  About 3,000 fans showed up to watch.  The team is scheduled to travel to Miyazaki tomorrow.

Nagisa Arakaki told reporters that he was thinking about throwing his big sweeping slider again because his shoulder is feeling much better (and because he needs to do well this year).  Arakaki decided to can the big slider last year because of problems with his right shoulder and instead turned to a slider with less break.

Toru Hosokawa is thinking about spending some time at Ni-gun spring camp because he wants a shot at catching every pitcher in the organization.  He wanted to do the same thing last year, but could not.  Hosokawa is particularly interested in catching 1st round draft pick Shota Takeda.

Seiichi Uchikawa made an appearance on FBS' Yume Kukan Sports on Sunday and said that he will begin using the color pink again (he went with the team color yellow last season but is reverting back to the pink he used when he played for Yokohama).

Wily Mo Pena and Brian Falkenborg were scheduled to arrive in Fukuoka today.  Their flight arrived at 8:30pm but only Falkenborg stepped off the plane.  Pena ended up arriving about two and a half hours later -- he missed his connecting flight to Fukuoka because his plane arrived at Narita (out of Chicago) about 50 minutes behind schedule.

Training camp for the 2011 draft class at the Saitozaki training facilities ended today.

===

Seiichi Uchikawa (29) made an appearance on FBS' Yumekukan Sports today and was asked if he wanted to play in the Majors.  His reply: "The moment I joined the Hawks, I decided I would finish things out here."

Edison Barrios arrived at Fukuoka Airport today (Venezuela > Narita > Fukuoka) and told reporters that he has been tossing bullpen sessions on a regular basis after two months of winter ball in Venezuela.

Rehab coach Kazumi Saito (34) will attend spring camp in Miyazaki for the first time in three years.

Saito extended his coaching contract with the team on Saturday.

Nobuhiko Matsunaka (38) on his role with the team:

I used to think about winning a championship while batting clean-up, but my view of the game starting changing last year.  [Yuichi] Honda, [Nobuhiro] Matsuda, [Seiichi] Uchikawa.  I will let them take care of the team.  I just want to play well over the remaining time I have left [in my career].  I think that will help the team.  I will play [with the excitement] as if I were a kid.

Nagisa Arakaki threw about 40 pitches to a standing catcher.  He told reporters he plans to throw about 100 pitches a session during spring camp.

1st round draft pick Shota Takeda tossed a bullpen session with a squatting catcher.

Sho Iwasaki tossed about 30 pitches in the bullpen on Thursday (standing catch).  Iwasaki was part of the group of players that worked out with Yu Darvish earlier this month.

Seiichi Uchikawa visited Yahoo Dome on Thursday and told reporters that he managed to keep his weight at 88kg while increase his muscle mass.

Nagisa Arakaki worked out at the Saitozaki training facilities on Wednesday (playing catch, weight training) and told reporters that his shoulder was feeling fine.

Ikusei 3rd round draft pick Shota Miura tossed a bullpen session on Wednesday.

The Kyushu Sportswriters Club announced today that the Softbank Hawks were co-winners of their Top Award for 2011.
