[4/6/2014] Injury Report: Shinnosuke Abe (Yomiuri), Shohei Tateyama (Yakult)

Yomiuri Giants

  • Shinnosuke Abe was left out of the starting line-up on Sunday because the Giants felt he was in no condition to play after taking an HBP off his left calf on Saturday.  Abe stayed back at the team hotel for treatment and rest.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/6/2014

Chunichi Dragons

  • Takahito Kudo was taken off the active roster on Sunday with pain in the back of his right hamstring.  He started feeling the pain while running the bases in the 8th inning of Saturday's game against the Yomiuri Giants.  It could take about four weeks for a full recovery.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/6/2014, Nikkan Sports 4/6/2014

Yokohama Bay Stars

Yakult Swallows

  • Kyohei Muranaka's start on Sunday was cut short as a precaution because of tightness in his lower back.  He will be take off the active roster.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/6/2014
  • Shohei Tateyama left Saturday's Ni-gun game after throwing just one pitch because of discomfort in his right elbow.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/6/2014 ... Tateyama started feeling some discomfort while throwing practice pitches and took himself out of the game.  He had the elbow examined by the team's medical director.  Whether he gets a full check-up has not yet been decided.  Source: Sanspo 4/6/2014

Chiba Lotte Marines

  • Kazuki Yoshimi tossed batting practice on Thursday for the first time since his surgery in June 2013.  It was the first time he faced hitters since May 7, 2013.  He threw fifty-five pitches.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/4/2014

  • Motohiro Shima was left out of the starting line-up on Friday because the Eagles wanted to give him the night off after he took a foul-tip off his right foot on Thursday.  Source: Sanspo 4/4/2014

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Atsushi Kita hurt his right shoulder while diving after a ball in foul territory in the 7th inning of Thursday's game against Softbank at YafuOku Dome.  He was examined at a hospital in Tokyo on Friday and diagnosed with shoulder inflammation.  He was taken off the active roster on the same day and will begin his rehab at Kamagaya on Sunday.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/4/2014

  • Naoya Masuda may not be ready for opening day because of discomfort in his right elbow.  He has not pitched since the 9th and will continue his workouts at Ni-gun.  Takashi Ogino (right knee) will also be sent down to Ni-gun.  Source: Sponichi 3/20/2014

Orix Buffaloes

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Shota Ono (left ankle sprain) played in a Ni-gun rehab game against Seibu on Wednesday.  He was the starting catcher and batted second.  He went 0-for-2: 2B8/9, BB.  This was his first game since he sprained his ankle while running the bases against Lotte on February 20.  He is still having a little trouble running, but has not given up on the possibility of making the opening day roster.  Source: Sports Hochi 3/20/2014 ... Yuki Karakawa will be sent down to Ni-gun because he needs a little more time to rehab his right elbow.  He will likely return to Ichi-gun on March 7 and pitch in a exhibition game against Softbank at YafuOku on March 10.

Naoya Masuda will also be sent down to Ni-gun -- he got a late start after suffering a collapsed lung and is now tossing bullpen sessions with pitch count limits.  Like Karakawa, he too will likely return to Ichi-gun on March 7.

Yuta Omine has been out with the flu.  He is expected to rejoin the team for workouts on Saturday.  He did some light workouts on his day off today.

According to Sponichi, five players are competing for the everyday job at first: Kazuya Fukuura, Saburo, Josh Whitesell, Shoitsu Omatsu, and Keiyo Aomatsu.  Tsutomu Ito is apparently looking for a first baseman that can hit.

Ichi-gun and Ni-gun camps had the day off today.

Toshiaki Imae took forty-two swings during indoor batting practice on his day off today.  Imae has been practicing under a different training schedule because he is working through back pain.

"I did not feel any discomfort.  It is getting better every day," said Imae regarding his lower back.

When he rejoins the rest of the team for workouts is still unknown.

Naoya Masuda was diagnosed with a collapsed lung on the 31st.  He was re-evaluated today and given a clean bill of health.  Even thought the team had the day off, he did some light running and exercises.  Masuda is hoping to toss a bullpen session during the second block of camp.

2012 Rookie of the Year: Yusuke Nomura (HIR), Naoya Masuda (LOT)

The Central League and Pacific League announced their selections for the 2012 Rookie of the Year Award.

Central League: Yusuke Nomura (Hiroshima - eighth player in franchise history)

27 G, 27 GS, 9-11, 172.2 IP, 704 BF, 143 H, 6 HR, 103 SO, 52 BB, 46 R, 38 ER, 1.98 ERA, 1.13 WHIP

Nomura is the first CL rookie to win the reward while recording an ERA under 2.00 since Tsuneo Horiuchi in 1966.

Pacific League: Naoya Masuda (Lotte - seventh player in franchise history)

72 G, 2-2, 41 HLD, 1 Sv, 75.1 IP, 308 BF, 61 H, 2 HR, 57 SO, 10 BB, 25 R, 14 ER, 1.67 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

Both players are twenty-three and are the first players born in the Heisei era to win the award.

The Pacific League also announced that Shota Takeda (Softbank) was selected to receive a special Top Rookie award.
